On the eastern side of the bay is Santorini, resembling a semicircle, crescent moon. To the west there is a smaller island called Thirasia. In the south is the smallest islet of Aspronisi.

Approx. 1600 BC the island survived an earthquake, followed by a volcanic eruption which, after the eruption, sank under the water, leaving only visible shores. All settlements and villages were destroyed. The last volcanic eruptions took place in 1950.
