Tarutung is one of the cities located in North Sumatra Province, precisely in North Tapanuli Regency. In Tarutung, almost all of the people are Batak and Karo tribes. In this city, my husband and I spent a few weeks ago looking for a new atmosphere and exploring every place we have never been to in Tarutung City. One of the attractions that must be visited and becomes our attraction is the Sipoholon White Crater.
Unlike a volcanic crater, this Sipoholon crater is a crater with active sulfur water, this crater is located in the city of Tarutung, precisely in the Sipoholon sub-district. That is why this sulfur crater is called Sipoholon White Crater. When you have entered the Sipoholon sub-district, even though it is still within a 5 Km radius, the smell of sulfur is still very strong in Sipoholon. But don't worry, this place is safe to visit as long as it doesn't take too long. Like me, for example, because it has been almost 2 hours on this white crater hill, I almost feel dizzy and a little short of breath.
To enjoy the scenery and collect lots of photos in this place, I think 30 minutes is more than enough time to explore the place. Because this place is like a painting. And white mountains like the color of snow that does not exist in Indonesia. This view is very rare and there are only a few places in Indonesia, even in North Sumatra Province itself there are only 2 sulfur craters like this and one of them is the white crater of Sipoholon.
Still in the Sipoholon area, we can see mining activities by pendors who have been licensed by the local government to legally mine sulfur. This sulfur will then be sold to several cities in Indonesia and some are processed first. Although I did not get further information on sulfur management from the community around the crater.
When we visit this crater we can climb the crater and if you want you can climb the peak, the crater is not hot as long as your feet don't step on the sulfur water directly, because the water is hot. This sulfur water is directly channeled to hotels that have hot springs around the white crater. Personally, I was very excited and didn't want to go home to see this sight, but as I said, it turned out that after almost 2 hours of being in this place, I was already feeling dizzy and a little short of breath. Unlike my husband who looks fine without experiencing any symptoms. Maybe I'm like that because my body condition is a little tired.
Not only the white crater, when we surround the hill, we will see another view, namely a black rock hill whose texture is very beautiful, God's perfect sculpture will not doubt its charm. You can climb this place and from up here you can see Tarutung City from the top of the hill. The cold air pierces the skin, even though it is in the Sulfur Water Crater, an amazing sight. It's really a complete package in this tour that is classified as Premium in Tarutung City. Highly recommended for you. The ticket to enter the crater is also not expensive at Rp. 5000 per person. You can enter through the hotels around the crater, even if you don't stay at this hotel. You just have to pay the entrance fee.
