A Glimpse of Toledo's Historic Center

A few days ago, my husband and I had to travel to Madrid for some paperwork. But since we had some time I planned to do some sightseeing from the moment we set foot in Madrid. I thought about what we could do with the little time we had available upon arrival, and then I remembered that friends and acquaintances had been raving about Toledo for a long time, a historic city that seems frozen in time. So, we decided that as soon as we arrived in Madrid, we would escape for a few hours to see the famous city for ourselves.

The day started early. We left home at 4:30 a.m. to catch the 6 a.m. AVE train. We arrived in Madrid around 11 a.m. The train was almost half an hour late, and since we knew that we couldn't check into the Airbnb until after 4 p.m., we set off for Toledo.

We thought it would be easy, but I must admit it was quite an adventure. It was our first time using the Madrid subway, and between transfers, signs, and people rushing around, I felt like I was in a maze. In the end, by asking around, we managed to get to Chamartín station, where I had to take the bus. We were lucky that a subway worker gave us a map of the subway lines, and honestly, after that, everything was easier. With that map, we didn't need to ask so many questions. Once we got to the bus station, the excitement was building. It had been a while since we had taken a long trip.

Hace unos días mi esposo y y  tuvimos que viajar a Madrid por un asunto de papeles. Pero como teníamos algo de tiempo aproveché el momento y planifiqué para turistear desde que pisáramos suelo madrileño. Pensé que podríamos hacer con el poco tiempo que teníamos disponible a nuestra llegada, entonces recordé que desde hace tiempo amigos y conocidos me habían hablado maravillas de Toledo, una ciudad histórica que parece detenida en el tiempo, así que decidimos apenas llegar a Madrid escaparnos unas horas para conocer la tan famosa ciudad en persona.

El día empezó temprano, salimos de casa a las 4:30 de la mañana para tomar el tren AVE de las 6. Llegamos alrededor de las 11 de la mañana a Madrid,  el tren tenia casi media hora de retraso y, como ya sabíamos que la entrada al Airbnb era después de las 16H emprendimos el camino hacia Toledo. 

Pensábamos que todo iba ser sencillo, pero confieso que fue toda una aventura. Era nuestra primera vez usando el metro de Madrid y entre transbordos, carteles y gente que va a mil por hora, me sentía como en un laberinto. Al final preguntando logramos llegar a la estación de Chamartín, donde debía tomar el autobús, tuvimos la suerte que un trabajador del metro nos regaló un mapa de las líneas del metro y la verdad después de eso todo fue más sencillo, con ese mapa ya no era necesario hacer tantas preguntas. Una vez que llegamos a la estación de autobuses la emoción iba en aumento, ya hacía tiempo que no hacíamos un viaje algo largo.

I had already been told that Toledo was very popular with tourists, but I thought that since it was a weekday, there wouldn't be so many people. How wrong I was! The line to get on the bus was endless. It took us an hour to get on the bus. We were already tired from the trip from Vigo and hungry, but we had to wait until we got to Toledo to eat something.

After boarding the bus, the journey was quite short, only 45 minutes. At 1:45 p.m., we were already stepping on Toledo soil. The plan was simple: see as much of the historic center as we could before returning to Madrid in the afternoon, where we had booked an Airbnb. I knew it wasn't going to be a complete tour, but I also knew that every minute in Toledo would be worth it.

Ya me habían dicho que Toledo era muy visitada por turistas pero pensé que por ser un día de semana no habría tanta gente. Que equivocada estaba! La fila para tomar el autobús no tenía fin. Nos tomó una hora para subir al autobús. Ya veníamos cansados del viaje desde Vigo y teníamos hambre sin embargo tuvimos que esperar hasta llegar a Toledo para comer algo. 

Después de abordar el autobús el trayecto fue bastante corto, 45 minutos. A las 13:45 ya estábamos pisando suelo toledano. El plan era sencillo: recorrer lo que pudiera del casco histórico antes de volver a Madrid por la tarde, donde teníamos reservado el Airbnb. Sabía que no iba a ser un tour completo, pero también sabía que cualquier minuto en Toledo valdría la pena.

Once we arrived, all the discomfort we endured to get there was forgotten as soon as we entered the city. We were truly amazed by the history and architecture of all its buildings.

Walls surround the historic center, and walking there was like stepping back in time. The streets are narrow and cobbled, with stone buildings and small balconies. According to what I read, Toledo was for centuries a place where Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures coexisted, hence the name “the city of three cultures.” When you arrive in the city, you can see this in every corner: in the churches that look like mosques, in the synagogues with Mudejar decoration, and in the squares full of life.

Una vez que llegamos, toda la incomodidad que pasamos para llegar se nos olvidó apenas entramos a la ciudad, la verdad que nos dejó maravillados de tanta historia y arquitectura en todos sus edificios. 

Encerrado entre murallas se encuentra el casco histórico, caminar ahí fue como retroceder en el tiempo. Las calles son estrechas y empedradas, con edificios de piedra y balconcitos. Según lo que leí, Toledo fue durante siglos un lugar donde convivieron culturas cristiana, judía y musulmana, de ahí el nombre de “la ciudad de las tres culturas”. Al llegar a la ciudad eso se puede notar en cada rincón: en las iglesias que parecen mezquitas, en las sinagogas con decoración mudéjar y en las plazas llenas de vida.

One of the most special moments was arriving at the Primada Cathedral. From the outside, it is already impressive with its size and Gothic details, and I imagine that the inside is even more impressive (on this occasion, I could only admire it from the outside). Something unusual is that there are three doors on the main façade: the Door of Forgiveness, the Door of Judgment, and the Door of Hell. But so that you don't make a mistake when entering, the Door of Forgiveness is always open. :))

Uno de los momentos más especiales fue llegar hasta la Catedral Primada. Desde afuera ya se impone con su tamaño y detalles góticos, me imagino que por dentro es aún más impresionante (en esta ocasión solo pude admirarla desde el exterior). Algo particular es que en la fachada principal hay tres puertas: Puerta del perdón, puerta del juicio final y puerta del infierno.  Pero para que no te equivoques al entrar, siempre está abierta la puerta del perdón.

Looking at the cathedral's façade is almost like a dream. It is imposing, almost like a stone curtain guarding centuries and centuries of history. Every line and every figure carved with infinite patience conveys grandeur and devotion. The Gothic architecture rises elegantly, combining strength and delicacy. It is impossible not to feel amazed and at the same time small in the face of such majesty. I felt the same way when I saw the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela for the first time. There is something about these monuments that makes my imagination soar.

Observar la fachada de la Catedral es casi un sueño. Es imponente, casi como un telón de piedra guardando siglos y siglos de historia, cada línea y cada figura tallada con paciencia infinita transmite grandeza y devoción. La arquitectura gótica se alza con elegancia, mezclando fuerza y delicadeza, es inevitable sentirse maravillado y a la vez pequeño ante tanta majestuosidad. Sentí lo mismo que cuando vi la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela por primera vez. Hay algo en estos monumentos que me hacen volar la imaginación.

Right in front of the cathedral is the town hall, a building with beautiful architecture. I don't know much about it, but I guess it must be as old as the cathedral. And in the center is the Town Hall Square, with an old fountain that has been remodeled and now looks more like a swimming pool.

Near that place, we sat down for a while to rest and eat a sandwich I had prepared in the morning before leaving. And then something happened that made me smile: some little birds began to approach us little by little, clearly attracted by the breadcrumbs. In the end, we ended up sharing some of our food with them, and they stayed with us for a long time, keeping us company. I made a short video to capture the moment.

Justo al frente de la catedral, está el ayuntamiento, es un edificio con una arquitectura hermosa, no sé mucho sobre el pero supongo que debe ser tan antiguo como la catedral. Y en el centro se encuentra la plaza del Ayuntamiento,  con una antigua fuente que han remodelado y ahora parece más una piscina. 

Cerca de ese lugar nos sentamos un rato a descansar y a comer un sándwich que había preparado en la mañana antes de salir. Y ahí pasó algo que me sacó una sonrisa: unos pajaritos comenzaron a acercarse poco a poco, claramente atraídos por las migas de pan. Al final terminamos compartiendo parte de la comida con ellos, y por un largo rato estuvieron con nosotros haciéndonos compañía.  Hice un corto video para guardar el momento.

The Archbishop's Palace (photo below) is also located in the town hall square. It is another building with a long history and renovations to its façade. This building is connected to the cathedral by an arch that ends one of its narrow streets. A previous photo shows the frame with the cathedral tower at the end.

En la plaza del ayuntamiento también se encuentra el Palacio Arzobispal, (foto abajo) otro edificio con mucha historia y remodelaciones a su fachada.  Este edificio está unido a la catedral por medio de un arco que finaliza una de sus callecitas. En una foto anterior se muestra el marco con la torre de la catedral al final.

We continued our tour, getting a little lost in the narrow streets of the historic district, cell phones in hand. Those narrow streets suddenly open up into one of the many churches or historic monuments that can be found on every corner of the city. What I like most about visiting these places with so much history is that you never know what majestic sight you'll find around the corner.

Unfortunately, when you're having a great time, time flies, but every step was worth it. I was left wanting to visit the most famous monuments, to try the local food at my leisure, to watch the sunset over the Tagus, to take in the beautiful panoramic view of the Alcázar looking like a huge crown... but I leave with the certainty that I will return to Toledo as soon as I have another opportunity.

Seguimos nuestro recorrido perdiéndonos un poco por las callecitas del casco histórico, con celular en mano. Esas calles estrechas, que de pronto se abren en alguna de las tantas iglesias o monumentos históricos que hay por cada rincón de la ciudad, lo que más me gusta de visitar estos sitios con tanta historia es que nunca sabes con qué majestuosidad vas a encontrarte a la vuelta de la esquina.

Lamentablemente cuando la estas pasando super bien el tiempo se pasa volando, pero cada paso valió la pena. Me quedé con ganas de entrar a los monumentos más famosos, de probar la comida local con calma, de ver el atardecer sobre el Tajo, de tomar una panorámica hermosa donde se ve el Alcázar como una enorme corona… pero me voy con la certeza de que volveré a Toledo en cuanto tenga otra oportunidad.
