And yes, I don’t mean waterfalls which can be accessed via a car when you park the vehicle next to the waterfall and experience the views without walking at all.
The waterfall we decided to visit is called the Hristovski waterfall and it is located pretty close to a small and neat village next to the town of Elena. This region of Bulgaria is famous because there are a lot of small villages on the skirts of the mountains, where you can stay at numerous guest houses. Also they make a very tasty dried pork meat, but that’s another topic. We are now here for the waterfall, really!
There is an asphalt road not that far away from the place, but still there are like 400-500 meters of a walking through the forest and some fields, before you reach your target.
The sign that shows you where the path towards the waterfall starts is a bit old and needs a bit of refreshment, but for indicative purposes, it’s just alright and does it’s job pretty well.
Since we have two kids and one of our boys is almost 3 years old it was possible for him to walk on his own, but I had to carry the other one because he’s barely walking now. One year is not the age when the kids are supposed to walk in the forests. 😁
The road leading to the waterfall may be short, but the landscape changes pretty fast. The first half winds entirely in a nice forest, and as you reach closer to your goal, you’ll soon find yourself in a nice open field with a lot of butterflies, wild strawberries and various vivid flowers.
When you reach these fields you start hearing the sound of the water in the river and also the humming of the waterfall. You really can’t see anything at all, and really start seeing the water when you are a couple of meters away. That’s so, because the bench of the river is a bit lower than the surrounding fields and there are a lot of trees next to the water.
And yes, we reached the waterfall. The road leads you to its upper part but you can easily walk down to a lot narrower and steep paths. Still it was not a problem at all, to walk down and enjoy the view of the water falling down.
Given the fact it’s spring now, it was pretty warm and pleasant to walk. I think if you want to visit the waterfall in the summer it’s gonna be all right and you won’t overheat, just because half of the walking is done in the forests and as you reach the river it will freshen the surrounding air.
The time you need to walk there, enjoy the views a bit and come back to your car is less than an hour, so it’s really worth to visit the place.
Well, the walk was over and we had to walk back to our cars next to the road.
There are so many places like this that are worth visiting. It’s just enough to decide that you want to walk in the nature. All that will follow will only make you happy and refreshed. People really need this time away from the city and all the noise. If you feel depressed and unhappy for a reason, just pick a place and just go.
See you soon and have a nice day!
