En mi Cuba hay muchos sitios maravillosos. Si les digo que Matanzas guarda rincones mágicos, créanme que Boca de Camarioca es uno de esos lugares que te atrapan desde que llegás. La primera vez que fui, lo hice con mi amiga Daniela y nos montamos en una guagua medio destartalada, con la brisa colándose por las ventanillas y la gente hablando alto, como siempre pasa en Cuba. Ya desde el camino se siente ese aire de pueblo costero, con olor a salitre y a un buen chapuzón.

In my Cuba, there are many wonderful places. If I tell you that Matanzas holds magical corners, believe me, Boca de Camarioca is one of those places that grabs you from the moment you arrive. The first time I went, I went with my friend Daniela, and we got on a somewhat rickety bus, with the breeze sneaking in through the windows and people talking loudly, as always happens in Cuba. Even along the way, you feel that seaside town vibe, with the smell of salt spray and a good dip in the sea.

Cuando llegamos, lo primero que nos sorprendió fue el ambiente tranquilo. Boca de Camarioca, a pesar de estar muy cerca, no es Varadero con sus hoteles y turistas por todas partes. Aquí la cosa es más sencilla, más de barrio. Puedes ver en las calles coches con caballos y bici taxis. Ves a los pescadores tirando sus redes desde el puente, los niños montando bicicletas o corriendo descalzos por la arena, y las señoras vendiendo croquetas y pan con lechón en la esquina. Es un sitio donde la vida se mueve despacio.

When we arrived, the first thing that surprised us was the peaceful atmosphere. Boca de Camarioca, despite being very close, isn't like Varadero with its hotels and tourists everywhere. Here things are simpler, more neighborhood-like. You can see horse-drawn carts and bicycle taxis on the streets. You see fishermen casting their nets from the bridge, kids riding bikes or running barefoot on the sand, and ladies selling croquettes and bread with roast pork on the corner. It's a place where life moves slowly.

El mar ahí tiene un color que enamora, unas veces azul y otras de un verde esmeralda e intenso , con zonas más claras donde puedes ver los peces nadando cerca de la orilla. Yo me tiré con un snorkel prestado y quedé loca viendo los corales y las especies que se esconden bajo el agua. No hace falta ser experto, basta con tener ganas de explorar. Eso sí, el agua es tan clara que parece que estás metido en una pecera gigante.

The sea there has a color that steals your heart, sometimes blue and sometimes an intense, emerald green that's captivating, with shallower areas where you can see fish swimming near the shore. I jumped in with a borrowed snorkel and was amazed seeing the corals and the species hiding underwater. You don't need to be an expert, just willing to explore. And yes, the water is so clear it feels like you're inside a giant fish tank.

Otra cosa que me encantó fue la gente. Allí vive una amiga de mi madre. Se llama Olema y es en fermera (como mi madre), ellas se conocieron en la escuela de enfermería y hasta hoy nunca han dejado de ser amigas. Los camariocanos son de esos que te reciben con una sonrisa y enseguida te preguntan de dónde vienes. Me encontré con un viejo pescador que me contó historias de cuando el pueblo era más bullicioso, allá por los años sesenta, cuando muchos cubanos salieron por esa misma boca rumbo a Miami. Me habló con nostalgia, pero también con orgullo de su tierra, de cómo a pesar de todo, Boca de Camarioca sigue siendo un lugar especial.

Another thing I loved was the people. A friend of my mother's lives there. Her name is Olema, and she's a nurse (like my mom); they met in nursing school and have remained friends to this day. The people of Camarioca are the kind who welcome you with a smile and immediately ask where you're from. I ran into an old fisherman who told me stories about when the town was livelier, back in the sixties, when many Cubans left through that very inlet heading for Miami. He spoke nostalgically, but also with pride about his land, about how, despite everything, Boca de Camarioca remains a special place.

En Boca, como la llaman sus habitantes, hay un buen número de hostales y casas que se alquilar para pasar el día. Aquí se pueden ver algunos turistas, los que prwfieren la tranquilidad. La comida en Boca, ni hablar. Probé un arroz con mariscos que estaba de película, acompañado de una cerveza fría que me supo a gloria bajo el sol. Aquí no hay restaurantes de lujo, pero lo que se cocina tiene ese sabor casero que no se olvida. Y si te gusta el dulce, no te pierdas los casquitos de guayaba con queso crema, que son un manjar.

In Boca, as the locals call it, there's a good number of hostels and houses you can rent for the day. You can see some tourists here, those who prefer peace and quiet. And the food in Boca? Don't get me started. I tried a seafood rice that was out of this world, accompanied by a cold beer that tasted like heaven under the sun. There are no fancy restaurants here, but what they cook has that homemade flavor you never forget. And if you have a sweet tooth, don't miss the guava shells with cream cheese—they're a delicacy.

Al final del día, sentada frente al mar viendo cómo el sol se escondía detrás del horizonte, entendí que Boca de Camarioca es más que un sitio bonito. Es un pedazo de Cuba auténtica, sin maquillaje, donde la vida se disfruta con lo que hay. No es un destino turístico de catálogo, pero justamente por eso tiene ese encanto que te hace querer volver. Porque en Boca de Camarioca, lo que se respira es Cuba de verdad.

At the end of the day, sitting in front of the sea watching the sun disappear behind the horizon, I understood that Boca de Camarioca is more than just a pretty place. It's a piece of authentic Cuba, with no makeup, where life is enjoyed with what you have. It's not a catalog tourist destination, but that's precisely why it has that charm that makes you want to return. Because in Boca de Camarioca, what you breathe is real Cuba.
