The location of Cebu City is not only the center, the very center, of the Philippines; but an entry point of some of the most beautiful mountainous landscapes. My recent experience with the mountains that can be located in Cebu City was an experience that I will not be able to forget all my life. Having spectacular views, fresh air and a sense of adventure, this trip was an ideal escape out of hustle and bustle of the city.
One Saturday morning I went out with a group of friends and we were so much eager to see the mountains which we heard a lot about. This was because the Osmeña Peak which is the highest point in Cebu is surrounded by panoramic views, and rugged terrain. The trip started off with a scenic ride using curvy roads, through the green lush vegetation and a glimpse of the coastline at times. The nearer we got the more we were feeling the excitement in the car; we were on the verge of taking the peak.
We reached the foot of Osmeña Peak and were welcomed by an amiable local guide who was able to give tips on the best trails. This ascent started pretty well, with very distinct paths, and gentle declivities. But as we ascended the land grew increasingly harder, and we had steep slopes and rocky roads. The beauty of nature continued to arouse us but this was physically draining. The air was fresh and the noises of birds chirping in the air were heard; and created a soothing atmosphere in which we were to have our adventure.
As we mounted higher the views commenced to disperse. The hills were gentle rolling, and the rich green grass which covered it was a contrast of deep blue sky and the rich green grass. With every twist, there was a different perspective and I kept on stopping to capture a picture of the scenery using my camera. It was one of those reminders as to why I like to venture out into the nature: nature is beautiful and it is often hard to describe.
It was several hours, however, before hiking to the top, but at last we got there. I was on the top of the Osmeña Peak and the scenery that enveloped me was spectacular. The sight of the rugged mountain ranges as they stretched to the horizon was magic indeed. I would see the far off islands, the blue ocean waters and the wide horizons of Cebu. It was surreal to be in such location and bask in the glory of the world, such a high above the world.
We took time to celebrate our achievement and laughing and telling stories as we savor our well deserved snack. There was camaraderie between me and my friends as well as the experience and it was even more special. We made so many photographs, trying to capture the beauty that we were experiencing in a photograph, but I knew that no photograph could do justice to the beauty that we were witnessing.
As I ventured to go down, my thoughts were drifting to the journey. It was not only the process of getting to the top, but one of the memories which are formed in the process. All the troubles we had to experience, all the laughs and the unbelievable beauty of those places where we were lucky to go all led to a sense of satisfaction and appreciation. My trip to the mountains in Cebu City was the wake-up call that I needed and served as a reminder to me of the importance of disconnection with what we do on a daily basis and reconnect with nature. It rekindled my enthusiasm towards exploration and adventure and I went home a happy individual with a spirit that was willing to go on another adventure.
