Situated in the center of the Philippines, Surigao is famous for it’s splendid beaches, lively surf community and natural beauty. Of course, one of the many gems it boasts, Corregidor Island is a hidden paradise not far from the nation's capital which offers lovely escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. I went to this magical island recently and boy it was nothing sort of magical, I can’t wait to share my experience. The planes arried me to Siargao, where I was met by the warm tropical air and the sounds of waves coming to shore. The island has a laid back feel that is very easy to slip into. Once in Corregidor, I was ready for it. It was small, but beautiful, lush greenery and pristine white sand beaches.
Upon reaching the Corregidor Island I saw the most beautiful things I ever saw. The beach was the powder white sand and crystal clear turquoise water all rolled into one. I paused to let it all sink in there like the sand between my toes and the wind on my skin. It was a very small island and it was relatively undisturbed which made it a very serene place feeling like private paradise. Deciding to have a walk around the island, I walked the coastline, stumbling on hidden coves and rock formations. Every step brought a new breath taking view and I stopped a lot of times to take pictures, wishing I could have captured that beauty fully. Ocean water danced in a riot of colors in contrast to the surrounding greenery, a vista out of a postcard.
After being done with my exploration, I was ready to get into water activities. I rented a kayak and paddled through the quiet waters and marvelled at the coral reefs beneath it. It was a vibrant, teeming underwater life, it was a great snorkeling spot, there were so many fish. When I dove down I was met with a rainbow of colours–bright corals, schools of fish moving about and even a friendly sea turtle who swam next to me for a moment. At the end of the day I went along to a local snorkeling tour. And we went to some of the best spots the island had to offer with reefs full of marine life. Swimming in the waters with colorful fish, went under water and even explored the underwater world were the experiences of my own life that I would always remember.
When the sun started to set I settled down onto the beach to relax, finding a quiet spot. Oranges, pinks and purples flipped the sky into a canvas and colored the island with a warm glow. So I sat there and thanked myself for the beauty nature has and for the things I got to do. The waves lapped at the shore, the sound calming and the deep serenity of peace soaked over me.
Visiting Corregidor island again reminded me the beauty of the world. It was a perfect getaway with adventure, relaxing and beautiful wide open scenery. Whichever you want, Corregidor Island has that slice of paradise that you should never miss. I departed the island with a full heart and a camera full of memories and already making plans to come back to this wonderful corner of the Philippines.
