Since some days me and Mary are in Reggio Calabria, to Mary’s parents.
I love coming to their place as Mary’s parents are very welcoming, warm and I love speaking about strange topics with Mary’s father.
In the morning we are usually going to the seaside while in the afternoon we take some time to carry on our work AND keep projects going to make them ready soon.
Our first day trips has been to Bova, a small and ancient village that is on the mountains about 1 hour driving from the city-centre of Reggio Calabria.
I had been once to Bova Marina, that is the “mirroring” of the “mountain” Bova onto the seaside.
We started in the morning with a great coffee in Melito Porto Salvo, where in a café we bough an Americano Coffee and a small pastry, paying just 1.5€ that’s quite amazing if compared to northern Italy’s prices where one Americano Coffee costs about 2€ and a pastry is usually at least 1€.
Here is the receipt
And if the price is really astonishing the funniest things were two sugar sachets where some local “wisdom” was written. Local language of course. Here is one, the most “representative”, I would say.
Sachet stating: “Longer the thinking process, bigger the bulls++t”. (ahahahahah)
Then we moved towards Bova, a “Greek-italian” place, as a huge influence of Greek traditions is found there.
Bova is listed among the most beautiful villages (Borgo) of Italy.
In the city centre there is this huge and historical locomotive, that was brought there years and years ago, with a trip that lasted days.
And here below it’s me, contemplating the huge valley underneath Bova.
Well, yes, my face was not really “contemplating” as I recognized that Mary was taking some minutes to take me a picture :D
That below was the sight I was watching. Quite amazing!
Bova is situated more or less at 1000 metres on the sea but you can see the sea at the end of the valley and in 25 minutes we were from the sea directly to the mountains.
This was the entering of the “Giudecca”, where in Italian, the basis of that term recalls the Jewish as that was a tower with a small neighbour of Jewish that were thrown out during the pest in 15th and 16th century.
And here some “celebrative” ceramic vases, placed afterwards, as a commemoration of the existing tribe.
You can easily see the 6 pointed star and the vase were 7, a very recurrent number that recalls also the Menorah, the typical candelabrum from the Jewish tradition.
And here another vase, that I loved a lot for its color and its positioning so Mary simply decided to take a picture :D
This below is Bova, seen from above
By “above”, I mean the Norman Castle we went to visit and where I took advantage of its highest place to take a picture.
Afterwards, it was time to eat for Mary as that day was my fasting day so I only drank water. But Mary found the “LestoPitta”, which is a Pitta, typical Greek bread, made in the “Calabrese” style, with the “Parmigiana of Aubergines” inside.
I share here some pictures taken in the small streets of Bova, very steep and narrow and mysterious as well.
I had never been before to Bova but I suggest a visit there to everybody planning to go to Reggio Calabria for vacation as it’s a definitely fresher place (6 Celsius degrees less than the plains) and with special sights.
