The other day, I said goodbye to my life as a free being because this was the last walk I took in nature before my career consumed me, and this time I was accompanied by lovely friends and my godson dog.
El otro día me despedí de mi vida como un ser independiente que es mucho más que la carrera que estudia, porque este fue el último paseo que hice en la naturaleza antes de que mi carrera me consumiera, y esta vez me acompañaron lindos amigos y mi ahijado perruno.
Our goal was to visit two beautiful places that we would normally visit on two separate days, but we wanted to cover as much as possible that same day. We left very early from La Hechicera (in Mérida) and walked until we found a bus that would take us to Santa Rosa, which is a very beautiful rural community with stunning landscapes.
Nuestro objetivo era visitar dos sitios hermosos que en otra ocasión visitaríamos en dos días separados, pero queríamos abarcar todo lo que fuese posible ese mismo día. Salimos bien temprano desde la Hechicera, y caminamos hasta conseguir un bus que nos dejara en Santa Rosa, la cual es una comunidad rural muy linda de hermosos paisajes.
I already knew the place, but this time we were with a friend who was completely amazed by the location because it was her first time visiting, despite having lived in Mérida for a few years by then.
Yo ya conocía el sitio pero esta vez nos acompañaba una amiga que estaba totalmente maravillada con el lugar porque era la primera vez que lo visitaba, a pesar de haber vivido en Mérida por unos cuantos años para la fecha.
We arrived at the famous "vaquera" (cattle pasture) which is exactly what its name suggests: a large area where some cattle graze and coexist in this space that belongs to the University of Los Andes. There, we sat for a while under the shade of a small tree to cool off and eat some sweets before heading down to the Albarregas River, our spot.
Llegamos a la famosa vaquera, que no es más que lo que dice su propio nombre: un terreno amplio donde pastan y conviven algunas vacas en este espacio que pertenece a la Universidad de Los Andes.
Allí, nos sentamos un rato a la sombra de un pequeño árbol para refrescarnos y comer algunos dulces antes de bajar al río Albarregas, nuestro objetivo.
We descended from the vaquera to the river through what I call a passageway, which is a narrow path that you need to traverse with someone who already knows of its existence, as it is neither marked nor formally delineated. However, locals use it quite a bit to spend time at the river.
Descendimos desde la vaquera hasta al río por lo que yo llamo un pasadizo, que es un pequeño camino estrecho que debes transitar con alguien que ya conozca de su existencia, ya que no está señalizado ni formalmente delimitado. Sin embargo, los lugareños lo transitan bastante para pasar el rato en el río.
When we arrived, we were excited and immediately jumped in for a good swim. The noise of the strong current of water hitting the rocks made it difficult for us to hear each other clearly; it was as if the river itself was telling us to be quiet and just admire its beauty and strength.
Cuando llegamos, estábamos emocionados y de una vez nos metimos a darnos un buen chapuzón. El ruido de la fuerte corriente de agua golpeando con las rocas impedía mucho que pudiésemos escucharnos tranquilamente, era como si el propio río nos mandase a callar y solo admirar su belleza y fuerza.
After a while of freezing in its waters, we dried off and climbed back up to the vaquera. Given the time, we decided to head to our second stop: Los Cinaros.
Luego de un rato de congelarnos en sus aguas, nos secamos y volvimos a subir a la vaquera. Por la hora, decidimos emprender hacia nuestra segunda parada: Los Cinaros.
Los Cinaros is a large hill located right behind several houses in the Santa Rosa community. Just like with the river, you need to go with someone who knows how to get there since nothing is formally marked.
Los Cinaros se trata de una gran colina que está justo detrás de varias casas en la comunidad de Santa Rosa. Así como en el caso del río, debes ir con alguien que sepa cómo llegar ya que nada está formalmente señalizado.
We climbed for about 15 minutes between the houses to reach the open hill. There, we spent the rest of the afternoon under the shade of a large tree with an impressive view of the entire city of Mérida, the Sierra Nevada, and more. Truly, it is a place that is not to be missed.
Subimos unos 15 minutos entre las casas para llegar hacia la colina despejada. Allí, pasamos el resto de la tarde bajo la sombra de un gran árbol y con una impresionante vista hacia toda la ciudad de Mérida, la Sierra Nevada y más. Realmente, es un lugar que no tiene desperdicio alguno.
We brought a piece of cardboard that would serve as our sled on the hill, allowing us to slide down easily. So, after lunch and a bit of rest, that's what we did. We slid down fearlessly to where the piece of cardboard took us down the hill, drying our hair and clothes naturally with the tremendous breeze that embraced the hill. In fact, our cardboard took us right to the feet of a cow that was lying there serenely, just watching us, perhaps confused by the scene.
Nosotros llevamos un pedazo de cartón que nos serviría como nuestro tobogán en la colina, para poder deslizarnos fácilmente. Así que, luego de almorzar y reposar un rato, eso hicimos. Nos lanzamos sin miedo al éxito hasta donde el pedazo de cartón nos llevase por la colina, secándonos el pelo y la ropa al natural con la tremeda brisa que abrazaba la colina. Realmente, nuestros cartones nos llevaron hasta las patas de una vaca que estaba allí acostada y serena solo observándonos, quizá confundida por la escena.
We slid down the hill over and over again, ignoring our adult responsibilities and enjoying ourselves like children, without fear of anything. We took lovely photos, shared pleasant conversations, and by the end of the afternoon, a white and dense fog descended and enveloped us, to the point where we could no longer see the city of Mérida or much beyond the hill itself. Despite the fun and the cold white scene, we knew it was time to leave. It's never good to be caught by the fog in the mountains, as it gets dark quickly and can disorient you on the way back.
Nos lanzamos colina abajo una y otra vez, ignorando nuestras responsabilidades de adultos y disfrutando tal como niños, sin temor a nada. Tomamos fotos lindas, compartimos conversaciones agradables, y al final de la tarde bajó la blanca y densa neblina y nos arropó, al punto de que no lográbamos ver más la ciudad de Mérida ni mucho más allá de la propia colina. A pesar de lo divertido y de la escena fría y blanca, sabíamos que era tiempo de partir. Nunca es bueno que te coja la neblina en la montaña, ya que oscurece rápido y puede desorientarte a la hora de andar por el camino de regreso.
That day, interestingly, we knew it would be the last or one of our last walks in nature for a while, as in a few weeks we would start a new chapter in our university career, Medicine, and we knew it would be difficult to have that amount of time soon.
Ese día, curiosamente, sabíamos que sería el último o de nuestros últimos paseos en la naturaleza por un buen rato, ya que a las pocas semanas comenzaríamos una nueva etapa en nuestra carrera universitaria, Medicina, y sabíamos que sería difícil contar con esa cantidad de tiempo por lo pronto.
But, of course, it won't be the last time, and I'll be here to tell you all about it :)
