Several months ago—perhaps even more than a year ago—I shared a post titled “Postcards from My City” in this very community. When I wrote that post, my intention was to create a series of installments in which I could showcase places I consider iconic in Maracay, the city where I currently live. So, on this occasion, I’m presenting the second installment. Here, I’ll show you a street and a place that are very well known to the residents of this city.
On Santos Michelena Street, near the Ateneo de Maracay, there is a spot that—I’m sure—everyone from Maracay has passed by at least once in their life. It’s a fairly central area home to the La Capilla Shopping Center, the aforementioned Ateneo de Maracay, and a religious site. Between the La Capilla Shopping Center and the Ateneo, there is a passageway or alley where a permanent stage used to stand. Bands, usually rock bands, would perform there for free. Without a doubt, it was a key hub for the development of many of the city’s musicians and a cultural gathering place that would be packed with hundreds of people.
What I’m talking about happened many years ago; I barely got to enjoy it during my teenage years. Over time, that stage was removed, and the venue lost its cultural significance. However, we can still admire the Ateneo de Maracay, a theater that was recently renovated and looks absolutely beautiful today. The photos are proof of that. Plays, musical events, poetry recitals, and other artistic and cultural expressions of the city are presented there.
What I’m sharing with you today are places that are instantly recognizable to the residents of this city. As I mentioned earlier, it’s a very central location—a must-visit meeting spot and landmark. Surrounding it, of course, are the historic district and other iconic sites. This is the second part of “Postcards from My City.” I’ll be sharing other points of interest soon. It’s been a pleasure sharing this with you. See you soon!
