Imlil: My favorite place in Morocco so far 🇲🇦 [Eng][Spa]

After having traveled through a large part of the territory, I know that labeling a place as “favorite” should be the answer to an exhaustive evaluation, but although I only know a few cities in this country, I have come across a tour, very accessible to us tourists, that made me feel very happy and where I liked everything. From those moments, what I remember immediately is that this tour filled me up with calmness.

I think there are places where you instantly feel full of life. I suppose this may be due to the fact that certain conditions somehow take us to a safe space registered in our subconscious, bringing us closer to moments when our worries were not so common and our ideas still had some magical trait as they began to be defined.

Imlil is usually a very relaxed tourist destination to “peek” into the magnificent Atlas Valley when visiting it. There are also very complete and more extreme excursions for hikers in the mood to get close to the highest point in Africa, but they require time and preparation, something I have not counted on either of the two times I have been able to wander here, although it is a route I would love to do.

From Marrakech there are many tour guides that offer one-day routes that pass through Imlil, where you stop to walk for a couple of hours around the closest area of the valley to the village. That's how I got to know this place, to which I returned with no hesitation at the first chance I had.

Ya sé que etiquetar de “favorito” un lugar, debería ser la respuesta a una selección exhaustiva, después de haber recorrido gran parte del territorio, pero, aunque yo no conozca más que unas cuantas ciudades de este país, me he topado con un recorrido, muy accesible para nosotros los turistas, que me ha hecho sentir muy feliz y en donde me gustaba todo. De esos momentos, lo que rememoro de inmediato, es que este recorrido me colmó con tranquilidad.

Creo que hay lugares en los que uno se siente lleno de vida instantáneamente. Pienso que esto puede ser debido a que ciertas condiciones nos trasladen, de alguna forma, a un espacio seguro registrado en nuestro subconsciente, que nos acerquen a momentos en donde nuestras preocupaciones, no eran tan corrientes y nuestras ideas, aún guardaban algún rasgo mágico al comenzar a definirse.

Imlil suele ser un destino turístico muy relajado para “asomarse” al magnifico Valle del Atlas al visitarlo. También hay excursiones muy completas y más extremas para senderistas con ánimo de acercarse al punto más alto de África, pero requieren tiempo y preparación, algo con lo que no he contado en ninguna de las dos oportunidades que he podido pasear por aquí, aunque es un recorrido que me encantaría hacer.

Desde Marrakech hay muchos guías turísticos que ofrecen rutas de un día en las que se pasa por Imlil, en donde se hace una parada pare recorrer a pie, durante un par de horas, la parte del valle más cercana al pueblo. Fue así como llegué a conocer este lugar, al que regresé sin dudarlo en la primera oportunidad que tuve.

The valley tour starts in the village of Imlil, which is located at the base of the mountain and next to sloping roads. Full of life, stores and places to eat or drink tea. Although this is not where the locals live, the people of the area live deeper into the mountain, although most of the stores are next to the road, it is a relatively small space.

Along the route through the mountain, which aims to reach the waterfalls of Imlil and then return, there are some artisans selling typical sweets or elaborations based on leather and fabric. The patterns on the carpets are beautiful, there are many people who travel to these places just to buy from the artisans.

There is a point where the road begins to become wilder and more natural. We walked along rough dirt paths and stones that, at times, did not seem to differentiate at all, but thanks to the guide who accompanied us, there was no major inconvenience.

El recorrido por el valle comienza en el pueblo de Imlil, que está situado en la base de la montaña y al lado de carreteras empinadas. Lleno de vida, tiendas y sitios para comer o tomar té. Aunque no es allí donde residen los autóctonos, la gente de la zona vive mas adentrada en la montaña, aunque la mayor parte de los comercios están junto a la carretera, es un espacio relativamente pequeño.

A lo largo del recorrido por la montaña, que tiene como fin llegar a las cascadas de Imlil y luego regresar, hay algunos artesanos vendiendo dulces típicos o elaboraciones a base de cuero y tela. Los patrones en las alfombras son preciosos, hay mucha gente que viaja a estos lugares solo para comprar a los artesanos.

Hay un punto en el que el camino comienza a tornarse más salvaje y natural. Caminamos por senderos de tierra y piedras empinadas que, en algunos momentos, parecían no diferenciarse del todo, pero gracias al guía que nos acompañaba, no hubo mayor inconveniente.

When you reach the waterfalls, the path begins to show some elementary constructions, mostly with logs, which create spaces for visitors to relax for a while, eat and refresh themselves.

There is a small café that seems to be improvised at the base of the waterfalls, where they use the cold temperature of the water to keep the drinks they offer to the public cold, it is a “natural refrigerator” that is very attractive to visitors for its originality. They also offer Tajín to satiate the appetite, although I have been very early in the waterfalls and have not had the chance to eat there.

However, the natural orange juice is very popular, squeezed at the moment with oranges that are at a pleasant temperature thanks to the natural refrigerator, it ends up being very refreshing at the moment of resting a little from the hike.

The waterfall itself, on the other hand, is not too surprising. It is not a very large formation although they are nice to see and create a pleasant and refreshing atmosphere. The small pool that is formed, offers a space where one could stay a while in the water to beat the heat, but being a small space, it gets crowded quickly, especially in summer.

Cuando se alcanzan las cascadas, el camino comienza a mostrar algunas construcciones elementales, sobre todo con troncos, que crean espacios para que los visitantes puedan relajarse un rato, comer y refrescarse.

Hay un pequeño café que parece improvisado en la base de las cascadas, en donde utilizan la fría temperatura del agua para mantener frías las bebidas que ofrecen al público, es una “nevera natural” que resulta muy atractiva a los visitantes por su originalidad. También ofrecen Tajín para saciar el apetito, aunque yo he estado muy temprano en las cascadas y no he tenido la oportunidad de comer allí.

Sin embargo, el jugo de naranja natural es muy popular, exprimido al momento con naranjas que están a agradable temperatura gracias a la nevera natural, termina siendo muy refrescante al momento de descansar un poco de la caminata.

La cascada en sí, por otro lado, no es demasiado sorprendente. No es una formación muy grande aunque son bonitas de ver y crean un ambiente agradable y refrescante. El pequeño pozo que se forma, ofrece un espacio en donde uno podría permanecer un rato dentro del agua para apalear el calor, pero al ser un espacio reducido, se abarrota rápidamente, sobre todo en verano.

The photos at the waterfall are a kind of triumph for those who get there, especially for some people who did not consider that the tour required some effort. I am used to walking and I love to do it in the mountains, I think it is a light walk but that does not mean that it doesn't require some effort at the time of climbing the uphill areas. Light, but not recommended for elderly or physically challenged people.

After resting for a while at the site of the waterfalls, the path is retraced, although a different route is taken almost halfway, to finish the tour having lunch with the typical food, prepared by local people in a homely atmosphere.

Leaving the previous space, we go back into the rural area, walking for a long time along natural trails that I love.

Las fotos en la cascada son una especie de triunfo para el que llega hasta allí, sobre todo para algunas personas que no consideraban que el recorrido requiriera algún esfuerzo. Yo estoy acostumbrada a caminar y me encanta hacerlo por la montaña, creo que es un paseo ligero pero eso no quita que requiera cierto esfuerzo al momento de subir las zonas empinadas. Ligero, pero no recomendable para personas mayores o con algún impedimento físico.

Luego de descansar un rato en el emplazamiento de las cascadas, se desanda el camino, aunque se toma una ruta diferente casi a la mitad, para terminar el recorrido almorzando la comida típica, elaborada por gente local en un ambiente hogareño.

Dejar el espacio anterior, hace que nos adentremos nuevamente en la zona rural, caminando largo rato por senderos naturales que a mí me encantan.

An interesting feature that can be seen in some parts of the tour, those that are closer to Imlil, are the water conduits through which water is transferred from the waterfall to the populated areas around it.

Not only is it interesting in the engineering sense, but the sound of the flowing water accompanies you as you walk beside it and makes the walk more lovely. It's something that helped me enjoy it quite a bit, I felt that the vegetation set next to these canals created the perfect temperature to linger there. I couldn't help but imagine how comfortable it would be to lie down and read in a hammock, right there.

In addition to the water channels, there are other rudimentary constructions improvised on the rocks, including small ovens and bypasses to channel the water.

Un detalle interesante que se aprecia en algunas partes del recorrido, las que están más cerca de Imlil, son los conductos de agua por los que se traslada esta, desde la cascada hasta las zonas pobladas al rededor.

No solo es interesante en el sentido de la ingeniería, sino que el sonido del agua que fluye, te acompaña mientras caminas a su lado y hace que el paseo sea más encantador. Es algo que a mí me ayudó a disfrutar bastante, sentía que el conjunto vegetal al lado de estos canales creaban la temperatura perfecta para quedarse allí. No pude evitar imaginar lo cómodo que sería acostarse a leer en una hamaca, en ese mismo lugar.

Además de los canales de agua, hay otras construcciones rudimentarias improvisadas en la rocas, incluso pequeños hornos y desvíos para encausar el agua.

Despite having visited Imlil earlier this year, I remember very fondly the first time I was there, in September 2022. At that time I dedicated myself to take many more pictures than this last time, because what I wanted was to enjoy the most of that feeling that I had felt the first time and that, fortunately, filled me again with peace of mind.

So before I conclude I will share some pictures of that first trip, where you can better appreciate the greenery under the many walnut trees that are planted and how renovated the mural of the waterfalls was on that occasion.

I also came across, that time, a shepherd who was moving a small group of lambs. They surprised us by suddenly coming down the mountain and it was a funny moment being on such a narrow road.

A pesar de haber visitado Imlil a principios de este año, recuerdo con mucho cariño la primera vez que me encontré allí, en septiembre de 2022. En ese momento me dediqué a tomar muchas mas fotografías que esta última vez, pues lo que quería era disfrutar al máximo de esa sensación que había sentido la primera vez y que, por suerte, volvió a llenarme de tranquilidad.

Así que antes de finalizar voy a compartir unas fotografías de ese primer viaje, en donde se aprecia mejor el verdor bajo los muchos nogales que hay plantados allí y lo renovado que estaba el mural en de las cascadas en aquella oportunidad.

También me encontré, aquella vez, con un pastor que estaba trasladando un pequeño grupo de corderos. Nos sorprendieron bajando repentinamente de la montaña y fue un momento divertido estando en un camino tan estrecho.

In the picture above, you can appreciate the views during the descent from the highest part of the mountain. They are beautiful panoramas in which you can see the indigenous settlements of the locals, houses built of mud on the mountain, isolated from any influence outside the original tribe.

Walking around appreciating these constructions makes you feel as if you were watching a live historical movie, my pictures do not do justice to how imposing they are, but at least they are a memory that allows me to return there from time to time.

I am sure that in the Atlas Valley there are similar spaces, where the influence of man is less noticeable and with much more impressive landscapes, where I would love to go, but that does not stop me from wanting to share how magical this space has been for me.

A short trip that I felt renewing and that made me realize that, when a place really touches us, revisiting it is not a waste of time, but a way to return to that primitive and intangible home that lies within ourselves.

En la fotografía de arriba, se aprecian las vistas durante el descenso desde la parte más alta a la que llegamos en la montaña. Son hermosas panorámicas en las que se divisan los emplazamientos indigenas de los locales, casas construidas de barro en la montaña, aisladas de cualquier influencia ajena a la tribu original.

Caminar por allí apreciando estas construcciones te hace sentir como si estuvieses viendo una película histórica en directo, mis fotografías no le hacen justicia a lo imponente que son, pero al menos son un recuerdo que me permite volver allí de vez en cuando.

Estoy segura de que en el Valle del Atlas hay espacios parecidos, donde se aprecia menos la influencia del hombre y con paisajes mucho más impresionantes, a los que me encantaría ir, pero eso no hace que se me quiten las ganas de compartir lo mágico que ha resultado este espacio para mí.

Un corto viaje que sentí renovador y que me hizo darme cuenta que, cuando un lugar nos marca realmente, volver a visitarlo no es una perdida de tiempo, sino una forma de regresar a esa casa primitiva e intangible que se encuentra dentro de nosotros mismos.
