Conociendo La Habana desde un auto clásico
Algunos turistas y locales concuerdan que visitar La Habana es estar en una ciudad que te transporta a diferentes épocas en el tiempo. A veces tan lejos como 400 años con los primeros castillos y fortalezas españolas, otras veces numerosos edificios te llevan a la etapa neocolonial (primera mitad del siglo XX), sientes que caminando por la ciudad retrocedes 20 o 30 años. Basta con salir del aeropuerto “José Martí” de La Habana y llegar a su parqueo para darte cuenta que retrocediste 70 años si automovilísticamente hablamos. Si, la gran mayoría de sus autos tienen más de medio siglo de explotación. Yo como cubana, y habanera, aunque a veces me queje mucho de su bullicio y su aspecto vetusto me pregunto qué sería de la icónica imagen de mi ciudad sin sus viejos almendrones.
Some tourists and locals agree that visiting Havana is being in a city that transports you to different periods in time. Sometimes as far back as 400 years with the first Spanish castles and fortresses, other times numerous buildings take you to the neocolonial stage (first half of the 20th century), you feel that walking through the city you go back 20 or 30 years. All you have to do is leave the “José Martí” airport in Havana and arrive at its parking lot to realize that you went back 70 years if we spoke automobile. Yes, the vast majority of their cars have been in operation for more than half a century. I eat Cuban, and Habanera, although sometimes I complain a lot about its bustle and its ancient appearance, I wonder what the iconic image of my city would be without its old almendrones.

El almendrón cubano
Almendrón, así se le denomina en Cuba a este tipo de carro en su mayoría de fabricación norteamericana de los años 30´s, 40´s y 50´s. Más que nada, se les llama así porque su apariencia externa recuerda a una almendra. Nuestro país tiene un parque automovilístico detenido en los años 50´s, un detalle pintoresco para los visitantes, y un achaque para nosotros los citadinos. Son utilizados como taxis, aunque tienen un ritmo lento por los años que cargan encima. Para los turistas que consideran viejo un auto de los 90´s, ver autos tan añejos andar y desandar como nuevos las calles habaneras es un espectáculo digno de apreciar. Pero para los habaneros casi siempre representan contaminación, antigüedad, e inseguridad. Y digo casi siempre porque a pesar de todo forman parte de nuestra cultura y de nuestro orgullo. Una típica relación de amor-odio.
** The Cuban almendrón **
Almendrón, this is the name in Cuba for this type of car, mostly of North American manufacture from the 30's, 40's and 50's. More than anything, they are so called because their external appearance is reminiscent of an almond. They are used as taxis, although they have a slow pace due to the years they carry. But for Havanans they almost always represent contamination, antiquity, and insecurity. And I say almost always because despite everything they are part of our culture and our pride. A typical love-hate relationship.
¿Qué tipo de autos puedo encontrar?
Puedes ver y montarte en autos modernos, y muy modernos, no digo que todos sean vejestorios ambulantes, puedes tomar tu taxi climatizado y recorrer La Habana muy frescamente detrás de un cristal. Pero vamos, lo divertido es conocer La Habana en un viejo Moskvitch, soviético, años 70´s, de los más populares solo en Cuba, con cientos de miles de kilómetros recorridos. Puedes también elegir entre clásicos Cadillacs, Fords, Porsches, Chevrolets o Pontiacs, siempre recordando que son de hace más de medio siglo, no los últimos modelos. Este tipo de autos dejaron de entrar al país a partir del triunfo de la Revolución Cubana en 1959, y luego solo entraban autos de fabricación rusa. Es importante aclarar que en su mayoría han sido modificados e hibridados, por mecánicas más baratas de mantener y en ocasiones un poco más seguras.
** What kind of cars can I find? **

Para el pueblo y los visitantes forman parte indispensable del atractivo turístico de Cuba, son una joya patrimonial. Si buscas La Habana en internet no saldrán más de cinco fotografías sin que aparezca una del imponente Capitolio con un auto antiguo, del mítico Malecón habanero con un auto antiguo, del bar favorito de Hemingway, el Floridita, con un auto antiguo. Hay gran variedad de colores y modelos, llamativos, elegantes. Pero todos tan o más antiguos que los narrados anteriormente, eso sí, muy bien conservados. Son autos dignos de grandes colecciones de tan importantes marcas como Cadillacs, Fords, Porsches, Chevrolets o Pontiacs.
Los coches que brindan tours guiados por La Habana, en su mayoría conservan su mecánica original, se ven perfectos, como recién salidos de la fábrica, casi todos descapotables. Se puede apreciar como sus orgullosos choferes, por lo general sus dueños, los miman y cuidan como si de sus esposas se tratara. Puedes contratar su servicio de recorrido por la ciudad, que viene con un guía que te explica casi siempre en tu idioma, cada rincón que visitas y su historia. Esta es, sin dudas, una de las mejores formas de conocer la ciudad de forma rápida y divertida.

Tendrás una oportunidad exclusiva de viajar en un auto de más de medio siglo de antigüedad, descapotable, que te proporciona un sentimiento de libertad y felicidad que yo solo podría comparar con escenas homólogas de las películas de Hollywood. Recorrerás lugares icónicos de La Habana, cargados de historia, desde barrios pobres como Centro Habana, hasta zonas de élite como Vedado y Miramar. Mientras disfrutas de la vista, de la brisa y del olor a mar, conocerás de los más interesantes lugares de la ciudad como lo son el Malecón, la Tribuna Antiimperialista y la Plaza de la Revolución. Apreciaras muy de cerca la variada composición arquitectónica de sus edificios más emblemáticos, como el edificio Bacardí, el Capitolio, las iglesias y las fortificaciones españolas. También visitarás el conocido como pulmón de la ciudad, el bosque de La Habana. Casi al finalizar el paseo tienes la oportunidad que muy pocos han tenido, la visita al famoso bar Salón de los Grandes, antiguamente construido para preservar La Habana durante la crisis de los misiles de octubre de 1962. Por si todo esto no te resulta suficiente, termina el tour por todo lo alto tomando una bebida típica cubana mientras caminas por el jardín del Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Desde ahí puedes enamorarte de la vista de la caída del atardecer en el malecón. Sin dudas vas a tener que liberar espacio en tu cámara fotográfica.
