Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
Today, we embark on a journey through the rustic authenticity that characterizes the villages of Aguiar, Alvre, Brandião, Sarnada, Senande and Santa Comba, delving into a medieval past that unfolds in each schist and quartzite stone that supports these charming houses. Senande was the village chosen to form part of the Parque das Serras do Porto trail. Here, rurality is more than a characteristic, it is a living testimony to the tradition that spans the centuries.
This is a natural treasure that extends over almost 6,000 hectares, encompassing six imposing mountains: Santa Justa, Pias, Castiçal, Santa Iria, Flores and Banjas. This is a world apart, almost an enchanted world that stretches across the municipalities of Gondomar, Paredes and Valongo, creating a beautiful symphony between nature and civilization.
While exploring this village, I realized the magic that lies in the antiquity of its medieval origins. Each alley is a portal to the past, where architecture stands as a tribute to the skill of ancient builders and the richness of raw materials. Schist and quartzite, extracted from the region's mountains, give life to these buildings that have withstood the greatest test of all time.
The agricultural practice that is still visible in these lands is more than a tradition, it is a commitment to the land, a continuous dialogue between man and nature. On the trails we followed, we witnessed the patience and dedication of local farmers, cultivating the land with a care that transcends the seasons.
At each step, we discover unique details that escape less attentive eyes. Upon arriving at the Senande Main Church, a chapel almost went unnoticed. After looking for information we found out that it is the chapel of Bishop Dom João Gomes Ferreira, who I already told you about here on a visit to Penafiel :-)
In these enchanting corners, we find more than an isolated village, we discovered a treasure trove of stories intertwined with the daily lives of these people. Each stone, each house, is a chapter that unfolds in a unique narrative, inviting everyone here to become part of this story that continues to be written.
I hope that the rurality of these villages remains a source of inspiration for those looking for a deeper connection with history, nature and tradition.
See you around.
I hope you enjoyed! Be happy 😊
Wishing you much peace and health
