I arrived at the area of the Church of São Bartolomeu de Campelo at a time when the sun had already risen as high as it could and was halfway down, which usually helps when taking photos. Easter was just a few days away, and this was noticeable right at the entrance to the small square around the church. There were hanging flowers, some decorative details near the doors, and enough activity to perceive that preparations were underway, all without great haste.

Cheguei à zona da Igreja de São Bartolomeu de Campelo, numa altura em que o sol já tinha subido tudo o que tinha de subir e já se encontrava a meio da descida, o que normalmente ajuda qualquer coisa quando se pretende tirar umas fotos. Faltavam poucos dias para a Páscoa e isso notava-se logo à entrada da pequena praça em redor da igreja. Havia flores penduradas, alguns apontamentos decorativos junto às portas e movimentação suficiente para perceber que os preparativos estavam em curso, tudo sem grandes sem pressas.
The church naturally dominates the space. The light-colored facade, marked by the stone around the doors and windows, stands out amidst the more discreet houses of the village. It is not an excessively ornate building, but it marks its position. The small staircase in front helps to create this feeling of separation between the street space and the religious space, even for those who only pass by to peek, as in our case, without any defined intention.

A igreja domina naturalmente o espaço. A fachada clara, marcada pela pedra em volta das portas e janelas, destaca-se no meio do casario mais discreto da vila. Não é uma construção excessivamente ornamentada, mas marca a sua posição. A pequena escadaria em frente ajuda a criar essa sensação de separação entre o espaço da rua e o espaço religioso, mesmo para quem apenas passa por ali só para espreitar, como no nosso caso, sem nenhuma intensão definida.
The doors were open, and from inside came the sound of low voices and some movement. We could see people inside organizing things, probably flowers, benches, details for the celebrations in the following days. I thought about going in for a moment, but we ended up not doing it because it seemed more sensible to leave those who were working there uninterrupted. There's a difference between visiting a space and invading it unnecessarily.

As portas estavam abertas e do interior vinha o som de vozes baixas e algum movimento. Via-se gente lá dentro a organizar coisas, provavelmente flores, bancos, detalhes para as celebrações dos dias seguintes. Pensei entrar por um momento, mas acabámos por não o fazer pois pareceu-nos mais sensato deixar quem ali estava a trabalhar sem interrupções. Há uma diferença entre visitar um espaço e invadi-lo sem necessidade.
We stayed outside longer, slowly walking around the area. The atmosphere was peaceful. Some people were chatting next to the church, others were simply passing by towards an uncertain destination for me. There were practically no tourists, at least not the kind of tourists that are noticeable from a distance, which completely changed the way the space presented itself. Everything seemed more genuine, less prepared to be observed.

Ficámos mais tempo cá fora, a percorrer devagar a área envolvente. O ambiente era tranquilo. Algumas pessoas conversavam junto à igreja, outras simplesmente passavam em direção a destino incerto para mim. Não havia praticamente turistas, pelo menos daqueles turistas que se evidenciam à distância, o que mudou completamente a forma como o espaço se apresentava. Tudo parecia mais genuíno, menos preparado para ser observado.
The smell was a difficult mixture to separate and distinguish, between fresh flowers, and that light aroma of wax and old wood that escaped from inside the church whenever someone entered or left. The sound of swallows momentarily overshadowed the conversations. At certain times, that was almost all you could hear.
It's noticeable that there's pride in that space, but without decorative excesses. The Easter decorations themselves followed this logic. Everything was very restrained, made for those who live there before being made for visitors.

O cheiro era uma mistura difícil de separar e distinguir, entre flores frescas, e aquele aroma leve de cera e madeira antiga que escapava do interior da igreja sempre que alguém entrava ou saía. O som das andorinhas sobrepunha-se por momentos às conversas. Em certas alturas quase só se ouvia isso.
Nota-se que existe orgulho naquele espaço, mas sem exageros decorativos. A própria decoração de Páscoa seguia essa lógica. Tudo muito contido, feito para quem vive ali antes de ser feito para quem visita.
Around the church, the landscape opens up, revealing the characteristic green hills of that area of Baião. The green was particularly intense because of spring, although the day seemed closer to summer. There was bright light, a clear sky, and that heat that naturally slows down movement.
I sat for a few minutes on one of the low walls near the square. A man came out of the church with a large bouquet of artificial flowers under his arm, spoke briefly with two ladies near the entrance, and went back inside without much ceremony. Everything very functional, very normal. That was probably the detail I liked seeing the most. The Easter preparations there didn't seem like an event staged to be seen. It was just part of the local routine.

À volta da igreja, a paisagem abre-se e deixa perceber as colinas verdes características daquela zona de Baião. O verde estava particularmente intenso por causa da primavera, embora o dia parecesse mais próximo do verão. Havia luz forte, céu limpo e aquele calor que abranda naturalmente os movimentos.
Sentei-me durante alguns minutos num dos muros baixos próximos da praça. Um homem saiu da igreja com um ramo grande de flores artificiais debaixo do braço, falou rapidamente com duas senhoras junto à entrada e voltou a entrar sem grandes cerimónias. Tudo muito funcional, muito normal. Foi provavelmente esse detalhe que mais gostei de ver. A preparação da Páscoa ali não parecia um evento montado para ser visto. Era apenas parte da rotina local.
Not everything in the surrounding area is particularly well-maintained. There are small, more worn details, areas where time is visible on the walls and floor. But, honestly, this ended up making the place more believable. There are places that lose their identity when everything seems too perfect.
When we left, the church was still open and there was still activity inside. Outside, that increasingly golden light was beginning to fall on the main facade, the perfect time to take those photos that rarely turn out badly, but it was time to move on.

Nem tudo no espaço envolvente está particularmente cuidado. Há pequenos detalhes mais desgastados, zonas onde o tempo é visível nas paredes e no pavimento. Mas, sinceramente, isso acabou por tornar o lugar mais credível. Há locais que perdem identidade quando tudo parece demasiado perfeito.
Quando fomos embora, a igreja continuava aberta e a movimentação mantinha-se lá dentro. Cá fora começava a cair aquela luz cada vez mais dourada sobre a fachada principal, a altura perfeita para tirar aquelas fotos que dificilmente ficam mal, mas estava na hora de seguir caminho.
