In the streets of Olomouc

Part One - Mysterious Corners

The city's wide streets with their opulent palaces, churches and monuments are one thing. It's quite another to get lost in the tangle of narrow streets of the historic center. And also, if the gates are open somewhere, to look into the courtyards and backyards where sometimes not even a local, let alone a tourist, will come.
Do you know those mountain gorges where a narrow path is blocked on both sides by massive rocks? You can find something similar in the city.

Díl první - tajemná zákoutí

Široké městské ulice s honosnými paláci, kostely a památkami, to je jedna věc. Druhá věc je zabloudit do změti úzkých uliček historického centra. A taky třeba, pokud jsou někde otevřená vrata, podívat se do dvorků a vnitrobloků, kam leckdy nepřijde ani místní občan, natož turista.
Znáte takové ty horské soutěsky, kdy úzká pěšina je sevřená z obou stran mohutnými skalními bloky? I ve městě se dá najít něco podobného.

Part Two - Sculptures

I love fine art and I like to notice details and things that often go unnoticed. For example, the Moravian statues on the third floor of a house. Can you identify them? The frontiersman with a dog is probably a Wallachian from the Beskydy Mountains. The farmer girl with the sickle is from Hana, the granary of Moravia. The third figure is a bit of a mystery to me, but he's holding a beet - the beet-growing area could be the Upper Moravian Úval north of Olomouc. And the fourth figure is undoubtedly an uncle from Moravian Slovácko, with a jug and a basket of grapes.

Díl druhý - sochy

Mám rád výtvarné umění a rád si všímám detailů a věcí, které bývají často nepovšimnuté. Například sochy Moravanů na jednom domě ve třetím patře. Dokážete je identifikovat? Hraničář s valaškou a se psem je nejspíš Valach s Beskyd. Selka se srpem je z Hané, obilnice Moravy. Třetí postava je pro mě trošku záhadou, ale drží v ruce řepu - řepařská oblast je možná Hornomoravský Úval severně od Olomouce. A čtvrtá postava je bezpochyby stréc z moravského Slovácka, s džbánkem a košem hroznů.

Some sculptures can inspire imagination and questions. Did Jesus go bowling? What does the house behind the church have to do with the Night Man? And can you cross an eagle with a swan?

Některé sochy dokážou vzbudit fantazii a různé otázky. Hrával Ježíš bowling? Co má společného dům za kostelem s ponocným? A je možné zkřížit orlici s labutí?

Part Three - Philosophers

Olomouc is a university town, and Palacký University focuses more on natural sciences and humanities. Its largest faculty is the Faculty of Arts, and it is so overcrowded that philosophy spills out into the streets.

Díl třetí - filosofové

Olomouc je univerzitní město a Univerzita Palackého je zaměřená spíš na přírodovědecké a humanitní obory. Její největší fakultou je fakulta filosofická a je tam takový přetlak, že filosofie prosakuje i do ulic v okolí.

Part Four - Militaria

For most of its history, Olomouc was a fortified city. Even much of the fortification has been preserved (Marshal Louis Raduit de Souches, among others, was involved in its design and construction - the Donkey Bridge in my earlier article). But what was, was. Pigeons shit on the reliefs commemorating military glory, only a commemorative plaque for fortress commander Radetzky remains, and there are ornamental gardens on the ramparts.

Díl čtvrtý - militárie

Velkou část své historie byla Olomouc pevnostním městem. Dokonce se zachovala i velká část fortifikace (na projektu a výstavbě se mimo jiné podílel i maršál Louis Raduit de Souches - oslí můstek na můj dřívější článek). Ale co bylo, to bylo. Na reliéfy na památku vojenské slávy serou holubi, po festuňkkomandantovi Radeckém zbyla jen pamětní deska a na hradebních parkánech jsou okrasné zahrady.
