When someone mentions "Medellín" many things may come to mind. For some, it will be places with considerable historical value, old and imposing buildings that subtly transport us to another era... For others, Medellín and the department of Antioquia in general are those beautiful little towns that surround it, places like El Peñol that perfectly synthesize colombian culture... For others, however, Medellín is Provenza.
Although we could argue that Provenza also has an undeniable historical and cultural value, it clearly exists to provide us with a very different experience from the one that other parts of Medellín bring.
In essence, we could define it as a neighborhood located in the heart of the city where almost all the nightlife takes place, full of cafes, bars and restaurants. An extremely eclectic place where people from all over the world coexist with the sole purpose of enjoying themselves.
There's even a ball pool, haha
I say "eclectic" because even though it is a place meant for partying and nightlife, ironically I feel that there are spaces for basically any type of adult to enjoy, regardless of age or gender.
This is evidenced by the large number of bars and restaurants that exist, all built around themes that manage to be different but coherent with each other.
For example, there are places with a very marked rock aesthetic, and music of the same style to accompany them, while others may be a little less aggressive and "pop", or they may be environments where hip hop is played, etc...
In terms of money, there are cheap options and others that are a little more expensive, but the variety is there and you have to know how to take advantage of it.
Although I am not a person who usually enjoys going out to parties and clubs at night, I admit that I ended up enjoying my time in Provence much more than expected, and I found places with a slightly calmer atmosphere where I could simply talk to my friends and eat something without worries.
Do I recommend it? It depends on what your intentions are, but overall I feel that it can provide a very enjoyable experience. Its place in modern Colombian popular culture is well deserved, and although the weather is a little colder than expected, its energy will end up infecting us.
