A few years ago we camped at Jamieson River on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. There were a handful of camps and no services. Then it mysteriously shut. Had they shut it for good? Was there a landslide? Why couldn't we access the track beyond?
Today we drove through to check it and wow! THIS is what a National Park campsite can look like, and we seriously think it has one of the best views on the coast. I mean, imagine a house with a view like this?
There's about twenty sites now, both for cars and tents. There's free fire pits.
There's even brand new gas barbecues. Yep. That's an Aussie thing and they are FREE.
There's two shelters with tables - one under which someone has set up a hammock.
There's gorgeous stones cut into benches to admire the incredible view.
You can camp there by booking on Parks Victoria here - but good luck finding a spot in the busy times, includng weekends! For example, this weekend is ENTIRELY booked! It's a popular spot.
However, we drove up the 4x4 track beyond, up a huge hill that conventional vehicles can't go. There's a heap of spots you could camp, but shouldn't - there's signs along the way saying no camping, and no fires. But seriously, we found probably one of the best spots we've thought of illegal camping around here ever - what an incredible view. THe overcoast weather doesn't do it justice, of course. But still - wow.
We're hoping we can look ahead and book a spot in the future. At 16 bucks a night, that's pretty cheap. It might be easier to get a spot mid week after the school holidays.
