Stone Town is a tourist place mainly attracts foreigners. Foreigners go to the beach, enjoy swimming with dolphins, visit spice gardens, eat sea food. Stone town is in Zanzibar, Tanzania in Africa Continent. Zanzibar is also known because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Looking at the buildings of the town, a confluence of Arab, Indian and African artwork is visible. The town is also famous for spices.
I travelled Zanzibar from India, it was a connecting flight with 17 hours travel, Stone town is 20 minutes road travel in the taxi from airport. First week We stayed in the apartment and explored local food, beaches, super market.
We had lot of fish, chicken rice. I find food very similar to India, it just they do not use red chilly in the food. In the weekend we moved to Stone town, in Hyatt hotel. We received very nice hospitality, humble people, and they wanted us to stay more.
On Sunday we decided to visit Stone Town and asked tour guide to help us to understand the Stone town. I was amazed how rich it is for its history. We decided to have tour guide and that was best decision as we were able to explore stone town.
First attraction was cat, in whole stone town you will find so many cats everywhere. I am in love with all the cats in the world.
I went there to conduct Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights training with Coaches. I spend 13 days in Zanzibar and travelled Arusha for two days during this time period.
The hotel was sea face, we used to go every evening to watch the sea waves. One day we also did swimming there, I can swim a little but not as much as my friend was doing. She is trend swimmer.
While roaming in Stone Town, we explored International Film Festival, while roaming there I clicked many photos while I forgot to see that photography is prohibited there. Well, this place is worth seeing.
Talking about the history of Stone Town, what I felt bad was that once upon a time this place was under the British and the British used to make the people here do a lot of work and later locked the people in the basements. I saw how more then 50 people were kept locked up in very small cellars. Of course, the government here has closed all such jails, but as a reminder, only two jails have been kept open even today.
The people here who were slaves in those days, their lives have not been able to escape from this prejudice even today. I have read during the museum visit that how this is still affecting people’s lives.
It is always happy feeling to meet someone with same language, man was sitting at his shop singing a Hindi song there and I recognised the singer, he said he only visited India once for medical situation and he loves Hindi old songs. The thing that I liked very much was that the local people here believe that the medical facility in India is very good, so people from here go to India for their treatment.
I am glad to visit Stone Town and defiantly would like to visit again.
Thank you for reading!
