Hello friends, here I am again after a long absence due to work that has kept me very busy. I apologise for not having shown you my usual posts on village, but today I want to introduce you to a wonderful borgo that I discovered by chance in Tuscany. Unfortunately, this hamlet is totally abandoned and is in danger of falling into ruin if no one buys it. That would be a real shame.
The village I am telling you about is called Buriano and is located in the municipality of Montecatini Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa. It was once a lively and populated village, but now it is deserted and silent.
While wandering around this beautiful hamlet, I was lucky enough to find a farmer who was working the fields and he explained to me that practically this hamlet was depopulated at the beginning of the 20th century, when most people left this small town to move to the big cities for work, at the time the first companies were being set up in Italy and so people went to work there to earn more money.
I think, but I am not sure, that the hamlet is medieval in origin, and according to what this kind gentleman told me, in recent years it had been bought by a Swiss doctor who practically wanted to turn it into a beauty farm, but was never able to realise this project for financial reasons, and his nephew came forward in the early 2000s to turn it into a tourist place, like the one I had introduced you to in a few previous posts, but in reality even the nephew did not succeed in this initiative, which is a pity because the place is very deserving.
I could only admire the village from the outside, but it was enough to understand the beauty and history of this place. I was sad to see that the houses are in poor condition and are falling into disrepair. I hope that the tourist interest will arouse the attention of local institutions, so as to enhance this unique place and restore it to its former glory.
I was pleased to learn that local citizens are planning to create an association to revitalise the village, starting from the bottom and with great determination. I am sure that, thanks to their commitment, this place will shine again as it once did.
If you decide to visit the village, I recommend you take a walk, but be careful, the houses are unsafe and it is not safe to enter. I assure you that even just admiring the village from the outside will be an unforgettable experience, a plunge into the past that will leave you open-mouthed.
And then, as always, I look forward to sharing with you more posts about the enchanting places I have discovered in my travels. Don't worry, I will change the content a little so as not to bore you with Tuscany alone.
When I leave these places I am always a little sad, because I would like to see them live again, but I am sure that someone will realise this artistic treasure sooner or later.
Goodbye dear readers, see you soon!
