Hello, dear friends.
Yesterday, before returning home to go back to work, since I was in the province of Siena, I went to discover other small villages on the advice of my dear friend, who knows these areas like the back of her hand.
And I discovered the medieval village of Montefollonico, which is practically located between the Valdichiana and Val d'Orcia in the province of Siena. I had already heard about this place, but I had never had the opportunity to visit it in person, and I must say that the impact was more than positive. Like other villages I've brought you here, this one also dates back to the Etruscan era, although it developed significantly around the year 1000 in the medieval period.
It is still surrounded by walls that preserve some towers and access gates. It's not always easy to find such constructions around these villages because, unfortunately, many of these walls were demolished in later eras. Fortunately, here, parts of the walls have remained untouched by human modifications.
Certainly, one of the main attractions is the Church of San Leonardo and also the Pretorio Palace, where you can find a tourist information center. This is also a very rare thing in these parts, but I was told that it's run by volunteers, and in my opinion, it's an excellent service, especially for tourists who are visiting this place for the first time.
In Montefollonico, a famous cheese is produced, which is Pecorino, and in December, there's a food and wine event to celebrate it. Certainly, the church impressed me a lot, especially because this time I had the opportunity to visit its interior. It also dates back to the year 1000, a masterpiece that must be preserved for sure.
During my walk, I saw that a house was practically decorated on the outside with very beautiful ceramics. I wonder whose house this was. Then, what you always come across during an exploration in these villages is the well. In fact, usually, in some square, you always find a well that is no longer in use now, but it's understood that it was once a fundamental aspect of life in these places.
I didn't take many photos in this place because the weather was getting worse, but I hope you liked the ones I shared here. See you in my next post, and I wish you all a good day!
