Palermo is a truly beautiful city, located in the wonderful south of Italy. The city is full of life and the mild climate makes it pleasant to spend time outdoors. During my visit, I was lucky enough to visit the city's port, where many cruise ships arrive. It was really exciting to see all these ships so close up and admire the beauty of the Sicilian coast. But Palermo is not just the port: the city is also famous for its history, culture and artistic heritage.
Unfortunately, Palermo is also famous for the mafia, which is still a problem in this city today. However, much has changed in recent times and when I returned to visit Palermo, after having already spent time there in the past, I found the city significantly improved. There are numerous murals around the city that remember judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, killed by the mafia, and other figures who have fought against this criminal organization. It is important that the memory of these people is preserved, in order to continue to fight against the mafia and ensure a safer and freer future for everyone. Despite the problems that still remain, Palermo is a truly fascinating city.
I cannot deny that one of the reasons I came to Palermo was also because of its famous Sicilian cuisine. Sicily is known all over the world for the quality of its food and the variety of its dishes, of which there are so many. During my trip, I had the opportunity to taste some of the local specialities and I must say that I was really satisfied. Pasta with sardines, which is my favourite, for example, is a typical Sicilian dish and consists of spaghetti dressed with tomato sauce, sardines and wild fennel. Other delicacies not to be missed are fish couscous, caponata and the Sicilian cannolo, a shortcrust pastry cake filled with ricotta and candied fruit. Of course, these are just a few examples of the extraordinary Sicilian cuisine, which I recommend you discover during your trip to Palermo. Not only museums and monuments, therefore, but also delicious flavours to taste!
In addition to its traditional cuisine, Sicily is also a region where there is a strong influence of flavours from other parts of the world. This is due to the history of Sicily, which has long been a crossroads of different peoples and cultures, and still is today. For example, it is possible to find dishes that have spices from the Orient or Africa as ingredients, or preparations that recall Arabic or Spanish cuisine. All this makes Sicilian cuisine truly unique and interesting to discover. The shops in Palermo are also very special, with handicrafts and souvenirs that reflect the culture and traditions of the region. Walking through the streets of the historical centre is really pleasant and one has the impression of taking a dip into the past. However, I expected to see more people around during my trip, perhaps due to the pandemic that was going on at the time of my visit.
During my trip to Palermo, I was lucky enough to admire some of the most beautiful palaces in the city. Their architecture is really impressive and rich in detail, and it really left me speechless. Unfortunately, however, many of these palaces were closed to the public during my visit, which was a bit of a shame. I understand that there are reasons of security or preservation of structures that may make it necessary to close certain buildings, but for those who want to visit Palermo and learn about its history, being able to enter these palaces and see their beauty up close would certainly have been an added value. I hope that in the future a way can be found to make these places more accessible to tourists, so that they can fully appreciate them and discover all they have to offer. Despite this minor inconvenience, however, Palermo remains a truly fascinating city full of treasures to discover.
I hope my description of Palermo has not bored you too much and given you an idea of how fascinating and rich in treasures this city is to discover. I, personally, have missed it just thinking about it, especially the mild climate and the warm Sicilian sun, which make it pleasant to spend time outdoors. I hope to visit Palermo again soon and discover more about its history, culture and cuisine. In the meantime, I hope this description has given you an appetite to discover for yourself all that this wonderful city has to offer. Don't miss the chance to visit Palermo, you will definitely regret it!
see you soon!
