A finales del mes de abril de este año mi hermana y yo nos fuimos a una excursión que nos llevó a dos lugares fabulosos que pertenecen al Parque Nacional Macarao, estado Miranda, que son el Bosque de Pinos y las Grietas de San Pedro, de los cuales había visto muchas fotos en Internet, pero la verdad son aún más sorprendentes cuando los ves en vivo y directo.
It was Saturday and we left super early for San Pedro de Los Altos, a town near the city of Los Teques and from where you can access these places. We arrived at about 7:40 am at the town square, the weather was cool and the sky was clear.
Era sábado y salimos súper temprano hacia San Pedro de Los Altos, población cercana a la ciudad de Los Teques y desde donde se accede a esos lugares. Llegamos como a las 7:40 am a la plaza del pueblo, el clima estaba fresco y el cielo despejado.
We started the hike up a street of the village to go to our first destination: the Pine Forest, we passed many beautiful houses and at a higher altitude we could see the mountain scenery with lots of crops.
Comenzamos la caminata en ascenso por una calle del pueblo para ir hacia nuestro primer destino: el Bosque de Pinos, pasamos por muchas bonitas casas y ya a más altura se veían los paisajes de montaña con un montón de sembradíos.
After about 20 minutes we reached a part where we took a detour on a dirt road that climbed up a hill.
Tras unos 20 minutos llegamos a una parte donde tomamos un desvío por un camino de tierra que subía por una loma.
At the beginning there are some trees but then the vegetation is low and all around appear the magnificent views of the mountains and the town of San Pedro de Los Altos, further and further away.
Al principio hay algunos árboles pero luego la vegetación es baja y aparecen alrededor las magníficas vistas de las montañas y del pueblo de San Pedro de Los Altos, cada vez más lejos.
The terrain becomes flatter after about 20 minutes, although you shouldn't neglect the steps because there are some treacherous rocks that can make you trip and fall.
El terreno ya se pone más plano como a los 20 minutos aunque no hay que descuidar los pasos porque hay algunas piedras traicioneras que te pueden hacer tropezar y caer.
On this part of the mountain there were many parched and burned areas. It was already about 8:30 in the morning and the sun was beginning to intensify.
Por esta parte de la montaña había muchas zonas resecas y quemadas. Ya eran como las 8:30 de la mañana y el sol comenzaba a intensificarse.
A few minutes later we reach a wide dirt road where we continue our route.
Unos minutos después llegamos a una vía de tierra amplia por donde continuamos nuestra ruta.
Then we took a break to wait for everyone in the group to arrive; on excursions, everyone never goes at the same pace. The little dog, who was like a guide, kept us company.
Luego hicimos una pausa para esperar que llegara toda la gente del grupo, en las excursiones nunca todos van al mismo ritmo. El perrito que era como un guía nos seguía acompañando.
Shortly after we arrived at a place called Loma de Eusebia, where there is a cross, we also made a brief stop there to contemplate the beautiful surroundings from the viewpoint.
Poco después llegamos a un lugar llamado Loma de Eusebia, donde hay una cruz, también hicimos una breve parada allí para contemplar el bellísimo entorno desde el mirador.
Now came a downhill trail, in general this excursion is of low difficulty.
Ahora venía un sendero de bajada, en general esta excursión es de dificultad baja.
Around here everything was starting to become more lush, that is, much more vegetation and trees.
Por aquí todo comenzaba a hacerse más frondoso, es decir, mucha más vegetación y árboles.
We took a few more steps and arrived at La Culebra sector of Macarao National Park, where the Park Ranger Station is located.
Dimos unos pasos más y llegamos al sector La Culebra del Parque Nacional Macarao, donde se encuentra el Puesto de Guardaparques.
/ Mi hermana There we were very kindly received by the park rangers in charge and they gave us a brief talk about the place and the rules we had to follow when heading towards the Pine Forest, such as not leaving garbage, not lighting bonfires and in general respecting the environment and its flora and fauna.
Allí nos recibieron muy amablemente los Guardaparques encargados y nos dieron una breve charla sobre el lugar y las normas que debíamos seguir al dirigirnos hacia el Bosque de Pinos, como no dejar basura, no encender fogatas y en general respetar el medio ambiente y su flora y fauna.
There are already several pine and eucalyptus trees scattered around here, as well as a nursery where they have several species growing for planting.
Ya por aquí hay varios pinos y eucaliptos dispersos, además de un vivero donde tienen varias especies en crecimiento para su siembra.
Now it was time to go up to the Pine Forest, trees that together with the eucalyptus are not native to this area. According to what the park rangers told us, they were planted here in the 1970s to reforest this area, although it's not clear for what purpose, whether it was for environmental reasons or to use the wood, what is certain is that they created a spectacular space for enjoyment that has been kept alive over the years.
Ahora sí, había llegado el momento de subir hacia el Bosque de Pinos, árboles que junto a los eucaliptos no son autóctonos de esta zona. Según nos informaron los guardaparques fueron sembrados aquí en la década de 1970 para reforestar esta área, aunque no está claro con qué propósito, si fue por motivos ambientales o para utilizar la madera, lo cierto es que crearon un espacio espectacular para el disfrute que se ha mantenido vivo a lo largo de estos años.
As soon as you enter this forest the atmosphere becomes different, it looks like a scenario of fantastic stories, the colors of the ground covered by the leaves or needles that the pines are throwing, the shade and the freshness also give it a mysterious touch.
Apenas te vas adentrando en este bosque el ambiente se vuelve diferente, parece un escenario de historias fantásticas, los colores del suelo arropado por las hojas o acículas que van botando los pinos, la sombra y el frescor le dan también un toque misterioso.
We climbed higher, the height of the trees is impressive and the smell they spread is very characteristic.
Fuimos subiendo más, la altura de los árboles es impresionante y el olor que esparcen es muy característico.
Many people come here to camp, with the permission of the park rangers you can do it, it's also an ideal place if you like photography, in this enchanted forest you can get some incredible images.
Aquí viene mucha gente a acampar, con el permiso de los guardaparques puedes hacerlo, además es un sitio ideal si te gusta la fotografía, en este bosque encantado puedes obtener unas imágenes increíbles.
There are some good viewpoints when you get to the higher parts, where you can feel a divine breeze.
Hay unos buenos miradores cuando llegas a las partes altas, donde puedes sentir una brisa divina.
Then we reached a flat area where we sat down to eat, rest and share a little with the other members of the group.
Luego llegamos a una parte plana donde nos sentamos a comer, descansar y a compartir un poco con los demás compañeros del grupo.

We spent about 40 minutes there and then went to explore the surrounding area. Although we didn't see much wildlife other than birds, we were told that there are many mammals such as deer, lowland paca, peccaries, foxes, sloths, howler monkeys, felines such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), puma and cunaguaro (Leopardus pardalis), as well as snakes such as butterfly tigers (Bothrops venezuelensis) and rattlesnakes.
Estuvimos como unos 40 minutos allí y luego nos fuimos a explorar un poco los alrededores cercanos. Aunque no vimos mucha fauna más allá de aves, nos dijeron que acá hay muchos mamíferos como: venados, lapas, báquiros, zorros, perezas, monos araguatos, felinos como el jaguar (Panthera onca), el puma y el cunaguaro (Leopardus pardalis), además de serpientes como las tigras mariposas (Bothrops venezuelensis) y las cascabeles.
As we descended from the beautiful Pine Forest, the lungs of the upper part of Miranda State, the park rangers bid us farewell and invited us to return to the area, as there are many more routes to discover here.
Al bajar del hermoso Bosque de Pinos, pulmón vegetal de los Altos Mirandinos, los guardaparques nos despidieron y nos invitaron a volver a la zona ya que hay muchas más rutas que conocer por aquí.
It was almost noon and the second part of the tour awaited us: The San Pedro Cracks, which I will show you in the next post.
