I remember that the first time I went to Hacienda Santa Teresa was to attend my sister's university graduation ceremony, which was held in the facilities there for events, I loved the place with its huge gardens and the old train station El Consejo dating from 1894 and was part of the Great Railway of Venezuela.
Recuerdo que la primera vez que fui a la Hacienda Santa Teresa fue para asistir al acto de graduación universitaria de mi hermana, que se realizó en las instalaciones que hay allí para eventos, me encantó el lugar con sus enormes jardines y la antigua estación de tren El Consejo que data de 1894 y era parte del Gran Ferrocarril de Venezuela.
Some time later I went back to attend an event that combined rugby championship and a musical concert, again I went to do the “Rum Route” with some friends, then I repeated this experience with my mother and sister. When a cousin came to visit Venezuela, we invited her to eat at the hacienda's restaurant and I also went for a bike ride on a route that crosses its reed beds. As I told you at the beginning, it is more than a place where rum is produced.
Tiempo después volví a ir para asistir a un evento que combinaba campeonato de rugby y concierto musical, otra vez fui para hacer la “Ruta del ron” con unos amigos, luego repetí esta experiencia con mi mamá y hermana. Cuando una prima vino de visita a Venezuela la invitamos a comer al restaurant de la hacienda y también fui a pasear en bicicleta en una ruta que atraviesa sus cañaverales. Como les conté al principio, es más que un lugar donde se produce ron.

The history of Hacienda Santa Teresa dates back to 1796 when it was founded by Count Martín Tovar Ponte, who with an artisanal alembic began to produce sugar cane brandy for himself and his friends.
La historia de la Hacienda Santa Teresa se remonta a 1796 cuando fue fundada por el Conde Martín Tovar Ponte, quien con un alambique artesanal empezó a producir aguardiente de caña de azúcar para él y sus amigos.
Later, in 1885, the hacienda was bought by Gustavo Julio Vollmer Ribas, it was he who brought a copper alembic from Germany and began to make the country's first rum in 1896. In 1909 he registered the first brand of this liquor in Venezuela: Ron Santa Teresa.

In the early twentieth century, the hacienda produced rum on a large scale and led the national market and in 1947 the company was modernized by installing the most advanced distillery in Latin America. In the following years the brand became internationalized and this Venezuelan rum became one of the most awarded and sold in the world.
Ya entrado el siglo XX la hacienda producía ron a gran escala y lideraba el mercado nacional y en 1947 se modernizó la empresa instalando la destilería más avanzada de Latinoamérica. En los años siguientes la marca se internacionalizó y este ron venezolano se convirtió en uno de los más premiados y vendidos en el mundo.
The hacienda also has social initiatives such as the Alcatraz Project, which was born in 2003 after a group of young people tried to rob a security inspector of the company. The police captured them and gave them the opportunity to choose between going to jail or paying their penalty by working on the hacienda. The young people accepted the job and others who belonged to the criminal gang also joined. Apart from their working hours they created a rugby team, a sport that helped them improve as people. About 1800 children and youth have passed through Project Alcatraz and the Community School Rugby program.
La hacienda tiene además iniciativas sociales como el Proyecto Alcatraz, el cual nació en 2003 luego de que un grupo de jóvenes intentó robar a un inspector de seguridad de la empresa. La policía los capturó y les dieron la oportunidad de elegir entre ir a la cárcel o pagar su falta trabajando en la hacienda. Los jóvenes aceptaron el trabajo y se incorporaron también otros más que pertenecían a la banda delictiva. Aparte de su jornada laboral crearon un equipo de rugby, deporte que los ayudó a mejorar como personas. Por el Proyecto Alcatraz y el programa de Rugby Escolar Comunitario han pasado unos 1800 niños y jóvenes.

This is perhaps the activity that attracts the most people to Hacienda Santa Teresa, because it combines the historical part with the explanation of the rum-making process, and of course, you try all the rums hehehe.
Esta es quizá la actividad que más gente atrae a la Hacienda Santa Teresa, porque combina la parte histórica con la explicación del proceso de elaboración del ron, y claro, pruebas todos los rones jejeje.
I did the Rum Route with some friends and on another occasion I went again with my sister and my mother.

After buying the tickets at the hacienda's box office, a little train picked us up to start the tour of the different stops that explain both the history of this place and the rum-making process.
Luego de comprar las entradas en la taquilla de la hacienda, un trencito nos recogió para empezar el recorrido por las diferentes paradas que explican tanto la historia de este lugar como el proceso de fabricación del ron.
On this tour we pass through the beautiful cane fields, the Cross de Aragua, which is made up of perfectly aligned chaguaramos and visit places such as Casa Tovar and the Museum of Rum, the coffee roaster, the distillery, the Private Winery, the Criadero de Solera and the tasting center.
En este tour pasamos por los hermosos cañaverales, la Cruz de Aragua, que está formada por chaguaramos perfectamente alineados y visitamos lugares como la Casa Tovar y el Museo del Ron, la torrefactora de café, la destilería, la Bodega Privada, el Criadero de Solera y el centro de catado.
There they told us that rum, born in the Antilles and the Caribbean, has several stages for its production:
• Harvest of sugar cane.
• Fermentation: with its natural and other organic yeasts.
• Distillation: the must obtained from the fermentation is distilled at 60 degree and left to age in the barrels.
• Aging: minimum two years.
• Blending: mixture of young and old alcoholes in the creation of rum.
Allí nos dijeron que el ron, originario de las Antillas y el Caribe, tiene varias etapas para su elaboración:
• Zafra: cosecha de la caña de azúcar.
• Fermentación: con sus levaduras naturales y otras orgánicas.
• Destilación: el mosto que se obtiene de la fermentación se destila a 60 gtrados y se deja envejecer en los barriles.
• Añejamiento: mínimo dos años.
• Blending: mezcla de los alcoholes jóvenes y viejos en la creación de ron.
Three types of rum are produced here: Santa Teresa Gran Reserva, the most emblematic, Santa Teresa Linaje and Santa Teresa 1796, which has been listed as the best in the world. There are also varieties such as Rhum Orange, made from rum and orange, and Arakú, created from coffee.
Aquí se producen tres tipos de ron: Santa Teresa Gran Reserva, el más emblemático, Santa Teresa Linaje y Santa Teresa 1796, el cual ha sido catalogado como el mejor del mundo. También hay variedades como el Rhum Orange, de Ron y naranja y el Arakú, creado a base de café.
When I went with my sister and my mother, we did a more serious tasting, none of the three knows much about liquors but with the information they gave us, we all felt like professional tasters.
