Mérida, en los andes venezolanos, ha sido siempre un estado muy turístico y sobre todo una meca para los montañistas. Hace varios años que hago senderismo, así que he ido a varias excursiones por estos lados y en esta ocasión compartiré con ustedes la que hice por el Valle de Mifafí, Parque Nacional Sierra de la Culata, durante la cual tuve la oportunidad de hacer cumbre en varios picos por encima de los 4.000 msnm (metros sobre el nivel del mar).

As soon as we got off the bus we were invaded by an intense cold. We took our backpacks and tents and located ourselves in a part in front of the Park Ranger Station, which is like a patio with a cement floor and around it there are several stalls selling typical food and handicrafts, of course at that time everything was closed. There are bathrooms here, so we could use them. We set up our tents, had dinner and went to rest because we had to get up very early the next day, the truth is that the cold didn't let me sleep almost nothing, my sister seems that she could... This first night was acclimatization to the altitude, we were at 3,650 masl.
Apenas bajamos del autobús nos invadió un intenso frío. Tomamos nuestras mochilas y carpas y nos ubicamos en una parte al frente del Puesto de Guardaparques que es como un patio con piso de cemento y que alrededor tiene varios puestos de venta de comida típica y artesanías, claro que a esa hora todo estaba cerrado. Aquí hay baños, así que podíamos usarlos. Armamos nuestras carpas, cenamos y nos fuimos a acostar porque debíamos levantarnos muy temprano al día siguiente, la verdad es que el frío no me dejó dormir casi nada, mi hermana parece que sí pudo… Esta primera noche fue de aclimatación a la altura, estábamos a 3.650 msnm.
In the morning we prepared our breakfast and while we gathered everything to start the excursion through the Mifafi Valley, a companion prepared coffee and gave it to us, I love coffee and drinking it in such a cold environment energizes you more. Then we went to the Inparques (National Parks Institute) booth to register because we were going to spend the night in the mountains for the next three days, and we had to pay a small fee for that.
En la mañana preparamos nuestro desayuno y mientras recogíamos todo para comenzar la excursión por el Valle de Mifafí, un compañero preparó café y nos dio, amo el café y tomarlo en un ambiente tan frío te energiza más. Luego fuimos a la caseta de Inparques (Instituto Nacional de Parques) para registrarnos porque íbamos a pernoctar entre las montañas los siguientes tres días, debíamos además pagar un pequeño importe por eso.
Next to the Park Ranger Station is the Experimental Station of the Center for the Repopulation and Conservation of Condors of the Cordillera, where we were able to meet Combatiente (Combatant), a specimen of this critically endangered species that is in captivity in order to reproduce this majestic bird and repopulate the area.
Al lado del Puesto de Guardaparques está la Estación Experimental del Centro de Repoblación y Conservación de Cóndores de la Cordillera, allí pudimos conocer a Combatiente, un ejemplar de esta especie en peligro crítico de extinción que se encuentra en cautiverio con el objetivo de reproducir a esta majestuosa ave y repoblar la zona.
To the young of Combatiente, which are released when they reach a certain age, are fitted with a locator to monitor them wherever they go. According to records, condors can fly at altitudes of more than 5,000 meters.
A las crías de Combatiente, que se liberan al alcanzar cierta edad, se les coloca un localizador para así monitorearlas donde quiera que vayan. Según registros, los cóndores pueden volar a más de 5.000 metros de altura.
When we were all ready, our guide Yraly gave us some recommendations for this first hike, such as constant hydration and not going too fast, actions that help to avoid the so-called "altitude sickness" in routes like this high mountain.
Cuando todos estuvimos listos nuestra guía Yraly nos dio unas recomendaciones para esta primera caminata, como por ejemplo hidratarnos constantemente y no ir muy rápido, acciones que ayudan a evitar el llamado “mal de altura” en rutas como esta de alta montaña.
This four-day trek consisted of approximately 23 km and on this first day the hike was 6 km to the High of Mifafí, where we would set up our first Base Camp.
Esta travesía de cuatro días constaba de aproximadamente 23 Km y en esta primera jornada la caminata era de 6 Km, hasta el Alto de Mifafí, donde instalaríamos nuestro primer Campamento Base.
Most of the people in the group paid for the mules to carry much of their things, my sister and I opted to carry our load, it wasn't so hard, although we were heading to the High of Mifafí the ascent is progressive, so there are not very steep climbs. This road can also be used by rustic 4x4 vehicles.
La mayoría de la gente del grupo pagó para que las mulas llevaran gran parte de sus cosas, mi hermana y yo optamos por llevar nuestra carga, no fue tan duro, aunque íbamos rumbo al Alto de Mifafí el ascenso es progresivo, de manera que no hay subidas muy empinadas. Por esta vía también pueden transitar vehículos rústicos 4x4.
The scenery here is mind-blowing, product of the combination of mountains, streams, xerophytic vegetation, huge rocks... the cold was also increasingly noticeable because we had a cloudy day, but it was felt mostly when we made a stop.
El paisaje aquí es alucinante, producto de la combinación de las montañas, los riachuelos, la vegetación xerófila, enormes rocas… el frío también se hacía notar cada vez más porque nos tocó un día nublado, pero se sentía más que todo cuando hacíamos alguna parada.
When we had been walking for about two and a half hours, a monumental rock formation appeared before us: The Dome, where the Chama River is born, one of the most important rivers in western Venezuela with a length of 200 km.
Cuando llevábamos como dos horas y media caminando apareció ante nosotros una monumental formación rocosa: El Domo, por allí nace el río Chama, uno de los más importantes del occidente de Venezuela con 200 Km de longitud.
As we advanced, the landscape and vegetation looked more incredible, the colors of the mountains, some of them like ashes, made everything look like from another planet.
A medida que avanzábamos el paisaje y la vegetación se veían más increíbles, los colores de las montañas, algunas como de ceniza hacían ver todo como de otro planeta.
It was about 4:00 in the afternoon and we were close to reaching the High of Mifafi, at 4,300 masl.
Ya eran como las 4 y pico de la tarde y estábamos cerca de llegar al Alto de Mifafi, a 4.300 msnm.
The last part of the hike of about 15 minutes was downhill and led us to a valley, our Base Camp 1, located between El Buitre and Los Nevados Peaks.
El último tramo de la caminata de unos 15 minutos fue en descenso y nos condujo a un valle, nuestro Campamento Base 1, ubicado entre los Picos El Buitre y Los Nevados.
Unfortunately there was no sun at all, we started to set up our tents upon arrival to protect ourselves and also shelter things in case of rain and then went to explore the surroundings a bit, there is a creek there.
Lamentablemente no había nada de sol, comenzamos a armar nuestras carpas al llegar para protegernos y también resguardar las cosas en caso de lluvia y luego fuimos a explorar un poco los alrededores, hay un riachuelo allí.
It didn't rain but the cold got worse and worse as it got darker, we prepared dinner early and went into the tent because we couldn't stand that extreme temperature. The companions of the group also took refuge in their tents and it was funny how we talked to each other from there, shouting, one of them regretted not being in his bed with popcorn in hand watching a movie or a baseball game, delusions caused by the freezing weather hahaha. My sister and I put on all the clothes we had brought and still we couldn't sleep, this is the place where I have felt the coldest in Venezuela, I'm sure the temperature reached below zero.
No llovió pero el frío se puso cada vez peor a medida que oscurecía, preparamos la cena temprano y nos metimos en la carpa porque no aguantábamos esa temperatura extrema. Los compañeros del grupo también se refugiaron en sus carpas y era gracioso cómo hablábamos entre nosotros desde allí, pegando gritos, uno de ellos lamentaba no estar en su cama con cotufas en mano viendo una película o un partido de béisbol, delirios provocados por el clima gélido jajaja. Mi hermana y yo nos pusimos toda la ropa que habíamos llevado y aún así no pudimos dormir, este es el lugar donde más frío he sentido en Venezuela, estoy segura de que la temperatura llegó bajo cero.
