The first day of hiking around the town of Calderas was being exciting, in the morning we visited the Little Coffee Town Don Rafa, as I reviewed in the previous post, and around noon we followed the route to the Rio Azul (Blue River), to see the impressive Devil's Corridors.
El primer día de excursión por los alrededores del pueblo de Calderas estaba siendo emocionante, en la mañana visitamos el Pueblito Cafetalero Don Rafa, como reseñé en la anterior publicación, y cerca del mediodía seguimos la ruta hacia el Río Azul, para conocer los impresionantes Corredores del Diablo.
The hike there had a certain degree of difficulty because there were many ravines, we had to go down carefully. The scenery here is beautiful, big trees, streams and lots of greenery.
La caminata hacia allá tuvo cierto grado de dificultad porque había muchos barrancos, debíamos bajar con cuidado. El paisaje por aquí es precioso, grandes árboles, riachuelos y mucho verdor.
There was quite a lot of humidity in the environment, the floor was wet and slippery at certain points, so you had to take each step without getting distracted.
Había bastante humedad en el ambiente, el suelo estaba mojado y resbaladizo en ciertos puntos, así que tenías que dar cada paso sin distraerte.
We reached a wooded area with huge rock walls and the descents became steeper, fortunately there were ropes to help us.
Llegamos a una parte boscosa con enormes paredes de roca y las bajadas se pusieron más abruptas, afortunadamente había cuerdas con las que nos ayudamos.
The Río Azul (Blue River) or Calderas river could already be heard around here and could be seen a little through the dense vegetation.
El Río Azul o Río Calderas ya se escuchaba por aquí y se veía un poco entre la densa vegetación.
We waited for the whole group to come down and then continued our hike along the edge of the river, it really is blue.
Esperamos a que todo el grupo bajara y luego continuamos la caminata por el borde del río, de verdad es azul.

A few steps further on the river is wider and looks deeper, and we are already in the Devil's Corridors, I don't know why they called it that, it looks more like something paradisiacal, how spectacular!
Unos pasos más adelante el río es más ancho y se ve más profundo, y ya estamos en los Corredores del Diablo, no sé por qué lo llamaron así, más bien parece algo paradisíaco, ¡qué espectacular!
Immediately we got on one of the big rocks next to the river, left our things and got undressed! In this kind of places I usually swim with leggings to avoid scratching my skin on the stones.
Inmediatamente nos ubicamos en una de las piedras grandes al lado del río, dejamos nuestras cosas ¡y a desvestirse! En este tipo de lugares suelo bañarme con leggins para evitar rasparme la piel con las piedras.
I must say that I had already wet my hands and the water here is freezing, so it wasn't easy to jump in, I was hesitant while I was cheering myself up watching the others jump in 😂.
Debo decir que ya había mojado mis manos y el agua aquí es helada, por lo que no fue fácil lanzarme, estaba indecisa mientras me daba ánimos viendo cómo se tiraban los demás 😂.
The other members of the group encouraged me and my sister too, although she didn't want to swim, I left her my camera to immortalize these moments.
Los compañeros del grupo me animaban y mi hermana también aunque no se quiso bañar, a ella le dejé mi cámara para que inmortalizara estos momentos.
I finally took the plunge and although the impact of the cold water was paralyzing, when I put myself where the sun was, everything was better.
Finalmente me lancé y aunque el impacto del agua fría fue paralizante, al ponerme donde había sol todo fue mejor.
I spent some time in the water and when I came out I lay down on the rock to sunbathe and then had something to eat and drink with my sister. There were more people there than just our group.
Pasé un rato en el agua y al salir me acosté en la piedra para tomar sol y luego comer y beber algo con mi hermana. Había más personas allí aparte de nuestro grupo.
We spent about an hour there, then the group guide told us that those of us who wanted to could go with him to the Devil's Cave, which is a little further down the rocks and across the river, of course I wasn't going to miss that! Since my sister stayed with those who didn't want to come, I left my backpack with her and only took my camera, it's waterproof so I could get it wet when crossing the river.
Como mi hermana se quedó con los que no quisieron venir, dejé mi mochila con ella y sólo me llevé mi cámara, es impermeable, así que podía mojarla al cruzar el río.
We arrived at a point where we had to go down the rocks, we had to do it very carefully because some of them had moss on their surface, so we all helped each other.
Llegamos a un punto donde teníamos que bajar por las rocas, había que hacerlo con mucho cuidado porque algunas tenían musgo en su superficie, entre todos nos ayudamos.
Next we had to cross the river, the good thing is that they have put some ropes there, so you can hold on and don't get carried away by the current.
Seguidamente teníamos que cruzar el río, lo bueno es que allí han puesto unas cuerdas, entonces te puedes agarrar para que no te lleve la corriente.
When you are in this area it makes sense that they call it the Devil's Corridors, the river is very fast-flowing, and we were told that during the rainy season the level rises a lot and probably carries away anything that crosses it.
Cuando estás por esta parte tiene sentido que le llamen los Corredores del Diablo, el río es súper caudaloso, además nos comentaron que en época de lluvias el nivel sube mucho y probablemente se lleva cualquier cosa que se le atraviese.
To get to the Devil's Cave we had to walk a little more, the lush vegetation that prevents the sun from illuminating the area directly, gives a touch of mystery to the whole environment.
Para llegar a La Cueva del Diablo teníamos que caminar un poco más, la frondosa vegetación que impide al sol iluminar directamente el área, le da un toque de misterio a todo el entorno.
And suddenly the entrance to the cave appeared.
Y de repente apareció la entrada de la cueva.
As we had no flashlights we just peeked a few steps beyond the entrance of the cave. The guide didn't have much information about it and when I later researched on the Internet, I found that it has been little explored but could be among the largest in Venezuela. Its surroundings are simply magical.
Como no teníamos linternas apenas nos asomamos unos pasos más allá de la entrada de la cueva. El guía no tenía mucha información sobre ella y cuando luego investigué en Internet, encontré que ha sido poco explorada pero que podría estar entre las más grandes de Venezuela. Sus alrededores son simplemente mágicos.
Some group mates also plunged here, I didn't, the water seemed colder than where I bathed 😂.
Algunos compañeros se zambulleron también por aquí, yo no, el agua me pareció más helada que donde me bañé 😂.
We returned to where the rest of the group that didn't come to the cave was and found them relaxing and chatting.
Regresamos a donde estaba el resto del grupo que no vino a la cueva y los encontramos relajados y conversando.
/ Mi hermana We also rested for a while before continuing, it was about 2:30 in the afternoon and there was one more route left in this first day of excursions around the town of Calderas, which I will show you in the next post.
