Every sunny day in December is perceived as a gift. Frost or thaw, snow underfoot or ice crust - it does not matter. It is important to see a clear blue sky and at least a glimpse of the sun's disk.
I started my walk in the middle of the day, but short daylight soon gave way to early evening twilight and pleased me with a beautiful sunset.
On this day I decided to take a walk along the Fontanka River embankment. The Fontanka River flows through the historic center of the city and such walks are always a pleasure.
However, on the banks of the Fontanka River magnificent palaces and mansions, where the nobility lived, you can see only at the very beginning, where the Fontanka River flows out of the Neva River. Further the Fontanka River flows through the former petty bourgeoisie and commercial districts. The banks of the river are mostly built up with nineteenth- and early twentieth-century apartment buildings.
The streets and embankments were covered with snow, but the snowplows had already worked their shift and it was quite comfortable to walk. Only the descents to the water remained inaccessible-the steps were covered with a thick layer of ice and snow.
The farther I walked, the darker the twilight grew. The streetlights began to come on. The street decorations for New Year's Eve were also turned on.
I turned from the Fontanka River embankment to the Kryukov Canal embankment to walk to one of the very beautiful corners of the city. This place has the unofficial name of Seven Bridges, because here two canals intersect, and you can see seven bridges in perspective. However, some tourists with particularly keen eyesight assure me that there are actually nine such bridges. I don't mind; nine is also a very handsome number.
