Leaving Porto,I drove about 70 km towards Costa Nova, looking forward to seeing the famous colorful houses in the village. While driving, I was able to enjoy the beautiful natural landscapes of the region, with its beaches, sand dunes. I arrived in Costa Nova this afternoon, the afternoon was a little overcast but a bit muggy, a little windy but we could walk well in a t-shirt, the coast of Nova is known for its houses with vibrant colors, even before they got there they could already be seen in the distance.
I parked the car very close to the houses, oddly enough I had never been to a touristic place where parking was so easy and best of all it's free :)
I started to explore the village. The colorful houses were really impressive, and I was fascinated by how unique each of them was, with their own color combinations and designs. In addition, they are built in a traditional wooden style, which gives them a rustic and cozy charm.
I also noticed that new builds are somehow required to respect certain rules like lists. What fascinates me is that I hate to see those villages full of history with those modern-style houses that take away all the charm of the place because they don't fit in with the environment.
As I walked through the narrow and winding streets of the village, I was also able to appreciate the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. There were a few tourists milling about, but most of the locals seemed to be enjoying their daily lives, sitting outside in front of their houses or walking their dogs. It was a welcome change given the fast pace of the city where I live, at the moment we must have around 350,000 people here in Porto.
Costa Nova houses are a true local icon!!! They are traditionally used by local fishermen as beach houses, and many have been adapted to be used as holiday homes for tourists. It's funny to think that these houses were originally used as a fishing warehouse to store boats and fish, but today they are a popular tourist attraction because of their unique architecture and color combination.
Walking along Costa Nova beach, it is impossible not to notice these colorful houses, with their stripes in shades of blue, red, yellow and green. They are built in wood, with a structure of slats covered with painted wooden boards. It really is an impressive sight!
After admiring the houses, I decided to walk towards the garden in front of them. The view of the estuary was breathtaking, with its fishing boats and waterfowl flying over the calm waters. The garden itself was also very beautiful, with lots of flowers and trees around and a huge lawn, there were even people playing with a wind kite. There were wooden benches scattered around the park where people could sit and enjoy the view. I sat down on one of these benches and watched the estuary, feeling the gentle breeze blowing from the sea.
