Welcome to Leça da Palmeira.
For many the most beautiful land in Portugal.
In fact, in my opinion, it is a place where everything is close by and Porto airport is just 5 minutes away, it belongs to Matosinhos and ends up being the rest of the city after the river.
I really like walking along the seafront, but today I want to talk to you about a specific monument on the site, in addition to the enormous importance it has had since its construction.
Upon reaching the Lighthouse of Leça da Palmeira, its height impresses in addition to its beauty, its grandeur contrasts with the rest of the city, even with apartments close by.
right there next to the waterfront and on the first line of the sea, this monument measuring about 46 meters can be seen up to 28 nautical miles, the equivalent of 52 kilometers
The white tower that rises over the sea of white tones to the top where I believe the structure is metallic with reddish tones through which the light takes. The view from the lighthouse facing the sea would be simply spectacular, with the waves breaking on the beach, and the sea wall where we can easily walk, run or even ride a bike.
unfortunately it was late and I couldn't go up to the lighthouse, but those who pass by can enter until 6 pm and the request for authorization can be made right there at the maritime police station, best of all is that this visit is free. but it is subject to availability
It was built in 1926 and came into operation on October 1st of the same year, replacing the old lighthouse at Fort Nossa Senhora das Neves. that later I will talk about it, a beautiful castle that makes the medieval fair.
In addition to its main function as a lighthouse, the Leça da Palmeira Lighthouse is also a popular tourist spot, offering stunning views over the ocean and surrounding coastline. In 2006, the lighthouse was classified as a national monument of Portugal due to its historical and architectural importance.
Close by is the petrogal (fuel refinery) and the river Leça, where containers and other products are unloaded by sea, the lighthouse still shines with its light.
At the moment it is automated, but in the past people used to live there to be able to call it, today the surrounding buildings serve as a center of operations for the maritime police
Who comes to visit Porto, ideally who has time before leaving again by plane, is visiting this place, I'm sure you won't regret it and often avoid those boring 5/6 hour stopovers inside an airport.
thank you very much for reading see you soon😀
