Hi Everyone,
as all of us are currently very restricted in our travels because of the pandemic or in our case also because of our new family member, my wife and I decided to write up one of our last big trips to Indonesia. So all of you can at least experience some of the beauty of our world at home while we enjoy the memories doing this. 😀

Hi Zusammen,
da Reisen aufgrund Corona kaum möglich ist, bzw. wir in unserem Fall sowieso durch die Geburt unseres zweiten kleinen Zwerges momentan auch keine großen Backpacking-Touren machen können, haben meine Frau und ich uns entschieden, eine unserer letzten großen Reisen zusammenzuschreiben. Wir nehmen euch mit nach Indonesien. 😀

Fine sandy beaches, steep cliffs and crystal clear turquoise water - that is what Nusa Penida stands for. We had seen pictures that just blew us away and knew straight away that we had to see this small island paradise with our own eyes.
Fortunately, day trips and boat crossings to Nusa Penida are offered from Ubud on a regular basis. So finally not getting there by plane, but on a bus and on a boat 😅
Feine Sandstrände, Steilklippen und glasklares türkisfarbenes Wasser - dafür steht Nusa Penida. Wir hatten davon Bilder gesehen und wussten gleich, dass wir uns dieses kleine Inselparadies mit eigenen Augen anschauen müssen.
Von Ubud aus werden glücklicherweise Tagesausflüge und Bootsüberfahrten nach Nusa Penida angeboten. Endlich also mal nicht ins Flugzeug für den nächsten Stop 😅
We were picked up very early by a driver who took us from our hotel in Ubud to the port of Sanur. If you are looking for a driver you can also always ask your hotel reception. From there we had to find the right speed boat to cross over to Nusa Penida. Our lack of language skills made this a bit more difficult, as we had to pick up our ticket at a counter, but no one spoke English there. In the end, we were able to make ourselves understood with hands and feet. A driver was waiting for us on the island, who drove us around the island all day. Just like any other tourist.
Unfortunately, our driver could hardly speak english, so we couldn't find out anything about the island from him. But boy, could he drive.. he drove us well and safely to all places worth seeing. Even if our hearts slipped into our pants on the bumpy slopes when another car came towards us and he partly drove on 3 tires with one hanging free. The paths consist only of potholes and are designed more for a single car - not for oncoming traffic. And due to the great hilly landscape, there is always a very steep slope down one side of the road. Yes, we held our breath a few times ... but he pulled through.
You can't do too many sights in one day because you are stuck in traffic jams so much and the road conditions mean that you can often only drive at really low speed. There are a lot of tourists who don't want to miss this highlight so close to Bali. Next time we would book two nights right on the island even though it is quite pricy to stay here.
Wir wurden sehr früh von einem Fahrer abgeholt, der uns zum Hafen Sanur gebracht hat. Von dort aus mussten wir das richtige Speed-Boot finden um nach Nusa Penida überzusetzen. Etwas schwierig waren die unsere mangelnden Sprachkenntnisse, da wir unser Ticket an einem Schalter abholen mussten, dort aber niemand Englisch sprach. Am Ende konnten wir uns mit Händen und Füßen verständlich machen. Auf der Insel hat wiederum ein Fahrer auf uns gewartet, der uns den ganzen Tag über die Insel gefahren hat. So wie gefühlt jedem anderen Touri.
Unser Fahrer konnte leider kaum Englisch, sodass wir von ihm nichts über die Insel erfahren konnten. Aber er hat uns gut und sicher zu allen sehenswerten Orten an einem Tag gefahren. Auch wenn uns auf den Holperpisten manchmal das Herz in die Hose gerutscht ist, wenn uns wieder ein anderes Auto entgegen kam. Die Wege bestehen nur aus Schlaglöchern und sind eher für ein einzelnes Auto ausgelegt - nicht für Gegenverkehr. Und aufgrund der tollen Hügellandschaft geht es auf einer Seite der Straße immer sehr steil einen Hang nach unten. Ja, wir haben ein paar Mal die Luft angehalten…
Allzuviele Sehenswürdigkeiten schafft man gar nicht an einem Tag, da man soooo viel im Stau steht und aufgrund der Straßenverhältnisse häufig nur Schnittgeschwindigkeit gefahren werden kann. Es sind doch einige Touristen, die sich dieses Highlight nicht entgehen lassen möchten. Beim nächsten Mal würden wir auf der Insel zwei Übernachtungen buchen.
First we went to Angels Billabong, a natural pool with great waves and colorfull reflections. The waves hit this natural pool again and again at high tide, so you should only swim there at low tide. But the infinity pool also looks spectacular from above thanks to the many colors and the high wave splashs
Zuerst sind wir zum Angels Billabong gefahren, einem Naturpool mit tollen Farbspiegelungen. Die Wellen schlagen bei Flut immer wieder in diesen Naturpool ein, sodass dort nur bei Ebbe gebadet werden sollte. Aber auch von oben sieht der Infinity-Pool durch die vielen Farben spektakulär aus
Just 5 minutes drive from Angels Billabong is Broken Bay, a huge hole filled with colorfull sea water.
This place is called Broken Bay because the water flows in and out of the bay through a rock hole that looks like an archway. This archway was created by the endless waves crashing against the cliffs for many years. The hole and the bay can be circled to get a great view of the wild nature and the super beautiful landscape from all sides. It's impressive how the waves hit the bay again and again. Bathing is not allowed there due to the strong current and danger of drowning. If you catch the sun from the right angle you get a great reflection.
Nur 5 Minuten vom Angels Billabong entfernt befindet sich Broken Bay, ein riesiges Loch, das mit Meerwasser gefüllt ist.
Dieser Ort wird Broken Bay genannt, weil das Wasser durch ein Felsloch, das wie ein Torbogen aussieht, in die Bucht rein und auch wieder raus fließt. Dieser Torbogen wurde über ganz viele Jahre von den Wellen in die Steilküste geschlagen. Das Loch beziehungsweise die Bucht kann einmal umrundet werden, um von allen Seiten einen tollen Blick auf die wilde Natur und superschöne Landschaft zu erhalten. Es ist beeindruckend, wie die Wellen immer wieder in die Bucht einschlagen. Baden ist dort aufgrund der starken Strömung nicht erlaubt.
Then we drove to the picture-perfect Kelingking Beach.
Unfortunately, we didn't have the time to climb down the steep coast from the viewing platform to the white sandy beach to linger a bit. Pity! We tried the first steps for a little, but it's quite a challenge with flip flops and just takes to long because of mud and slippery stones. So if you want to go down, you should definitely wear sturdy shoes. The descent should take about 45 minutes.
A lot of tourists crowd on the viewing platform to take the typical photo of this idyllic place. Just like us. 😉 On the other hand, it looked very empty on the beach, at least from above. You just have to take pictures from the right angle.
Anschließend sind wir weiter zum Bilderbuchstrand Kelingking Beach gefahren.
Zeitlich haben wir es leider nicht geschafft, von der Aussichtsplattform die Steilküste zu dem weißen Sandstrand nach unten zu klettern, um dort ein bisschen zu verweilen. Schade! Wir haben es ein Stück versucht, aber mit Flip Flops ist das eine ziemliche Herausforderung. Wer also nach unten will, sollte unbedingt festes Schuhwerk tragen. Der Abstieg dauert wohl ungefähr 45 Minuten.
Auf der Aussichtsplattform drängen sich sehr viele Touristen, um das typische Foto von diesem idyllischen Ort zu schießen. So wie wir eben auch. 😉 Am Strand hingegen sah es, jedenfalls von oben, sehr leer aus.
To end the beautiful day, we drove to Crystal Bay Beach, the most popular beach on the island. And according to the crowd, the typical stop before heading back to Bali by boat. After the sometimes very breakneck driving actions, a short break to relax was very welcome. This beach is very well developed for tourism. There are food stalls and you can borrow sun beds and umbrellas. This unfortunately is also visible in the amount of garbage (e.g. plastic bottles) a lot of people just dump in the jungle instead of recycling them properly.
The port is only about 30 minutes drive from the beach and the road is relatively well developed for island conditions.
Um den schönen Tag ausklingen zu lassen, sind wir zum Crystal Bay Beach gefahren, dem beliebtesten Strand auf der Insel. Und der Menge der Leute nach auch der typische Stop, bevor es mit dem Boot zurück nach Bali geht. Nach den teils sehr halsbrecherischen Fahraktionen war uns eine kurze Erholungspause zum entspannen sehr willkommen. Dieser Strand ist sehr gut touristisch erschlossen. Es gibt Essensstände und man kann Sonnenliegen und Sonnenschirme ausleihen.
Der Hafen ist nur circa 30 Fahrminuten vom Strand entfernt und die Straße ist relativ gut ausgebaut für Inselverhältnisse.
From our point of view, it is highly recommended to travel to Nusa Penida.
Next time we would spend several days here to get to know this beautiful piece of earth better and to save the queues of tourist cars. Because there is so much more that you can see on the island and you can then also travel counter clockwise to the tourist day trips from Bali and Lombok to get more tranquility.

Aus unserer Sicht ist es absolut empfehlenswert, nach Nusa Penida zu reisen.
Beim nächsten Mal würden wir hier allerdings mehrere Tage verbringen, um dieses wunderschöne Stückchen Erde genauer kennenzulernen und uns die Schlangen an Touri Autos zu sparen. Denn es gibt noch so vieles mehr, was man sich auf der Insel anschauen kann.
