Hi Everyone,
as all of us are currently very restricted in our travels because of the pandemic or in our case also because of our new family member, my wife and I decided to write up one of our last big trips to Indonesia. So all of you can at least experience some of the beauty of our world at home while we enjoy the memories doing this. 😀

da Reisen aufgrund Corona kaum möglich ist, bzw. wir in unserem Fall sowieso durch die Geburt unseres zweiten kleinen Zwerges momentan auch keine großen Backpacking-Touren machen können, haben meine Frau und ich uns entschieden, eine unserer letzten großen Reisen zusammenzuschreiben. Wir nehmen euch mit nach Indonesien. 😀

Actually, our stay in Flores was only a second choice. Originally we wanted to do a three-day ascent to the Rinjani volcano on Lombok. After this had erupted shortly before, we were forced to reschedule at short notice.
The choice fell on Flores, mainly because this island is next to Lombok and was still considered an insider tip to travel to and experience something untouched.
Eigentlich war unser Aufenthalt in Flores nur zweite Wahl. Ursprünglich wollten wir auf Lombok eine dreitägige Kraterbesteigung zum Vulkan Rinjani machen. Nachdem dieser kurz zuvor ausgebrochen war, waren wir gezwungen, kurzfristig umzuplanen.
Die Wahl ist auf Flores gefallen, hauptsächlich, weil diese Insel neben Lombok liegt und noch als Geheimtipp galt.
So we flew by plane (again^^) from Denpasar on Bali to the small port town of Labuan Bajo on Flores, which is the starting point for almost all excursions on the island. Labuan Bajo has spectacular sunsets, but apart from that, this small place is not particularly worth seeing. There is one main street where all restaurants, accommodations and tour operators are located.
We read beforehand that Flores is primarily known for two attractions: for the great underwater world and for visiting the Komodo National Park, probably the only place in the world where you can see the Komodo dragons in the wild.
Since we are not big water rats, we decided to take a trip to see the living dragons and scip the obligatory diving experience.
The Komodo National Park was established in 1980 as a sanctuary for Komodo dragons and the underwater world.
When looking for a reputable provider, we quickly found that the day trips to Komodo are combined with other stops in the national park. In the end we decided on the national park tour 'Komodo - Padar Island - Pink Beach'. Depending on the speed of the boat, the prices of the providers are very different. We have chosen a slightly slower but cheaper boat.
Mit dem Flugzeug sind wir also von Denpasar auf Bali zur kleinen Hafenstadt Labuan Bajo auf Flores geflogen, die der Ausgangspunkt für fast alle Ausflüge auf der Insel ist. Labuan Bajo hat spektakuläre Sonnenuntergänge, abgesehen davon ist dieser kleine Ort allerdings nicht besonders sehenswert. Es gibt eine Hauptstraße, an der sich alle Restaurants, Unterkünfte und Ausflugsanbieter befinden.
Im Vorfeld haben wir gelesen, dass Flores vor allem für zwei Attraktionen bekannt ist: für die tolle Unterwasserwelt und für den Besuch des Komodo Nationalparks, den wohl einzigen Ort der Welt, an dem man die Komodowarane in freier Wildbahn sehen kann.
Da wir keine großen Wasserratten sind, haben wir uns für den Ausflug zu den lebenden Drachen entschieden.
Der Komodo-Nationalpark wurde 1980 als Schutzgebiet für Komodo-Warane und die Unterwasserwelt gegründet.
Auf der Suche nach einem seriösen Anbieter haben wir schnell festgestellt, dass die Tagesausflüge nach Komodo mit weiteren Stops im Nationalpark kombiniert werden. Letztendlich haben wir uns für die Nationalpark-Tour ‚Komodo - Padar Island - Pink Beach’ entschieden. Je nach Schnelligkeit des Bootes sind die Preise der Anbieter sehr unterschiedlich. Wir haben ein etwas langsameres, aber dafür kostengünstigeres Boot gewählt.
Boat trip to Padar Island
Very early in the morning we met with other tourists at the harbor and got into the boat assigned to us by climbing acros the roof of several other boats. Shortly afterwards we started and quickly left the many small rubbish carpets in the water near the harbor behind us.
We had breakfast on the boat while we sailed for about three hours to our first stop, the island of Padar. Countless other tourist boats have already moored there in front of us. This is definitely no longer an insider tip ... The ascent to the viewpoint (about half an hour) was a bit tedious and arduous in the heat and with shoes without grip, but it was definitely worth it for the view. Wow! The view is beautiful. But that's all you can do on this small island. Just be there and enjoy. Well and take as many pictures as your phone can take 😉
After a few photos and the equally spectacular descent, we took another hour by boat to our next destination - the island of Komodo. We were really excited to meet the living dragons.
Ganz früh am Morgen haben wir uns mit weiteren Touristen am Hafen getroffen und sind über mehrere Boote in das uns zugeteilte Boot gestiegen. Kurz darauf ging es los und wir haben schnell die vielen kleinen Müllteppiche im Wasser Nahe des Hafens hinter uns gelassen.
Auf dem Boot gab es Frühstück, während wir circa drei Stunden zu unserem ersten Stop, der Insel Padar schipperten. Vor uns haben dort schon unzählige weitere Touriboote angelegt. Ein Geheimtipp ist das definitiv nicht mehr… Der Aufstieg zum Aussichtspunkt (circa eine halbe Stunde) war bei der Hitze und mit Schuhwerk ohne Grip etwas mühsam und beschwerlich, aber für die Aussicht hat sich das allemal gelohnt. Wow! Der Ausblick ist wunderschön. Mehr kann man auf dieser kleinen Insel aber auch nicht machen. Nur dort sein und genießen.
Nach ein paar Fotos und dem ebenso spektakulären Abstieg schipperten wir circa eine weitere Stunde mit dem Boot zu unserem nächsten Ziel - der Insel Komodo. Wir waren ganz gespannt, den lebenden Drachen zu begegnen.
Komodo Dragons
The Komodo dragons can be up to 3 m long and are therefore among the largest reptiles in the world. Since these can also be very dangerous, a visit to the dragons is only possible with a guide and only allowed if you stick to the paths.
When we get there, all we see at first is a huge jetty, a large visitor center and picnic areas. It's obviously quite a tourist attraction. After we bought our tickets at the local office, the tour started with our guide. It doesn't take long before we see the first lizards. They are very sluggish in the midday heat and without our guide we might not have discovered them at all, as they have adapted very well in color to their surroundings. But besides the heat it did not take too long before we were able to see more active comrades. After just under an hour, the tour in the park is over and it was time to depart the true dragons of earth.
Die Komodowarane können bis zu 3 m lang werden und zählen somit zu den größten Reptilien der Welt. Da diese auch sehr gefährlich werden können, ist ein Besuch bei den Drachen nur mit einem Guide möglich.
Als wir dort ankommen, sehen wir erstmal nur einen riesigen Steg, ein großes Besucherzentrum und Picknickplätze. Es ist nunmal eine Touristenattraktion. Nachdem wir unsere Tickets gekauft hatten, startete die Tour mit unserem Guide. Lang dauert es nicht, bis wir den ersten Waran sehen. Dieser ist sehr träge in der Mittagshitze und ohne unseren Guide hätten wir diesen vielleicht auch gar nicht entdeckt, da sich die Drachen farblich sehr gut an ihre Umgebung angepasst haben. Aber es dauerte nicht lange bis wir auch etwas aktivere Genossen sehen durften. Nach einer knappen Stunde ist aber auch die Tour im Park zu Ende.
Pink Beach
Stop number three of our boat tour was the Pink Beach, one of only seven pink beaches worldwide. The color is created by the organ pipe corals that are native there. From a distance the beach doesn't look that pink, you actually only see the effect when you are there. We had about an hour to swim and snorkel in the wonderfully crystal clear water. We also took a bit of time to take our pictures as standing on pink sand is quite unique.
In the afternoon we made our way back to the port. It was a long day with many highlights and we were looking forward to some relaxation.
Stop Nummer drei unserer Bootstour war der Pink Beach, einer von weltweit nur sieben pinkfarbenen Stränden. Die Farbe entsteht durch die Orgelpfeifen-Korallen, die dort heimisch sind. Von weitem sieht der Strand gar nicht so pink aus, den Effekt sieht man tatsächlich erst, wenn man dort ist. Wir hatten dort ca. eine Stunde Zeit zum Schwimmen und Schnorcheln in dem herrlich kristallklaren Wasser.
Nachmittags haben wir uns auf den Rückweg zum Hafen gemacht. Es war ein langer Tag mit vielen Highlights.
We spent the remaining days in Labuan Bajo on the beach and had a good time with cool drinks in the warm water on the sandy beach doing nothing for a change 😀
