Hi everyone ..
How are you?
This time I will tell you about my experience while on Mount Papandayan. Mountain climbing has become a hobby for some people who love nature. Because by climbing the mountain they feel like one with nature. Whatever is done is always related to nature.
Before we start the story, I will first introduce the history of the existence of Mount Papandayan.
MOUNT PAPANDAYAN
Mount Papandayan is a stratovolcano located in Garut Regency, West Java, precisely in Cisurupan District. The mountain, which is located about 70 km southeast of Bandung City, has a height of 2665 meters above sea level.
On Mount Papandayan there are several craters that are quite famous. Among them are Mas Crater, Nangklak Crater, Baru Crater and Manuk Crater. The craters emit steam from within.
BIODIVERSITY
Mount Papandayan also has flora in its area, which consists of Edelweiss (Anaphalis javanica), Puspa (Schima walichii), Suagi Tree (Vaccinium valium), Saninten (Castanea argentea), Pasang (Quercus platycorpa), Kihujan (Engelhardia spicata), Jamuju (Podocarpus imbricatus), and Manglid (Magnolia sp).
While the fauna consists of wild boar (Sus vitatus), pangolin (Manis javanicus), deer (Muntiacus muntjak), langur (Trachypitecus auratus) as well as several species of birds including Walik (Treron griccipilla), and Kutilang (Pycononotus aurigaste).
Mount Papandayan has Upper Dipterocarp forest, Hill Dipterocarp forest, Ericaceous forest, and Montane forest.
HISTORY OF HUTAN MATI
Based on the history of the Hutan Mati, Mount Papandayan originated from the devastating eruption of Mount Papandayan which occurred in 1772. Because the eruption caused the surrounding area to be flattened. In addition there are 40 villages and 2,597 residents around the mountain area are also buried in the volcanic lake. Likewise, pets and livestock were also affected by the volcanic eruption. And because of the greatness of the phenomenon, foreign journalists also describe the incident in his book entitled Natural Disaster.
The Hutan Mati does look a little scary, with a slightly dark atmosphere because of the hundreds of black cantigi trees that grow among them. However, if you look at it from a different point of view, the Hutan Mati actually looks beautiful and exotic. A unique and rare sight. Making the Hutan Mati a mandatory photo spot for climbers.
THE MYSTERY OF MOUNT PANANDAN
As in general, usually every mountain or any place must have a story of its own from a mystery. Many things happen that are invisible, very scary but never become a barrier for the Pendak to keep coming to him.
The mystery that occurs on Mount Papandayan is the Myth of the Hutan Mati. Where the Hutan Mati was once a village that was completely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Papandayan which killed nearly 3000 people. Because of that, sometimes some climbers like to see a white figure while climbing.
That's some history of Mount Papandayan. And this time I will tell the story of my journey while climbing Mount Papandayan.
This mountain is perfect for beginners. Same with me, because this is my first time climbing a mountain. This mountain is quite gentle and can even be passed by motorbike.
TOWARDS MT. PAPANDAYAN GARUT
At first I was just curious about some of my friends who have a hobby of climbing mountains. Because seeing their beautiful photos during the trip, and also some of their very fun stories. Since then I decided to join the hike.
It was 06.00 in the morning, I was ready to gather to go to Papandayan Mountain. At that time we decided to use a private vehicle. Me and some of my friends agreed and we went on a trip. Arriving in Garut there was a slight problem with the vehicle we were using. We also had to wait for some friends who were trying to repair a broken down vehicle, until finally we decided to take a pick-up car to go to the registration area.
ASKING PREPARATION
After we arrived and registered, we rushed to make the climb. We also did not forget to capture some moments while at Camp David. After checking all the luggage we set out on our journey.
For Mount Papandayan, it is very gentle and can be reached within 2 days and 1 night. But still with complete hiking equipment, yes!
DAVID CAMP – MAS CRATER (20 MINUTES)
Let's start the climb. The initial trip after passing Camp David we headed to Kawah Mas which was taken a distance of approximately 20 minutes.
Mount Papandayan is very unique because the crater is near the basecamp and is still very active. We saw steam coming out and occasionally we heard the sound of sulfur boiling from the crater vent. The view of white volcanic rock with steam escaping here and there makes for a very beautiful sight. After 20-30 minutes we arrived at the path leading to the hill.
KAWAH MAS – PONDOK SALADA (1-2 HOURS)
Now we are heading to Pondok Salada, where climbers usually set up tents to rest before heading to the summit. When traveling on the right, you can see a small lake that is green in color tosca which was formed during the eruption in 2002.
During the trip we also found a small river flow, we also rested for a while to gather energy before continuing our journey. Because the next trip will take a lot of energy with a fairly steep route.
After a 1-2 hour journey (Depending on speed and stamina) we arrived at the Pondok Salada.
PONDOK SALADA – TEGAL ALUN (1 HOUR)
There are several routes to Tegal Alun. The fastest path is the right-hand side, cutting through the middle of the forest on the other side of the ridge, but the path is very steep. While the path on the left is quite gentle, it's just that the route is very far, because it passes through the famous Hutan Mati in Papandayan.
We also who had rested at Pondok Salada decided to head to Tegal Alun at 04.00 am, because we wanted to catch the sunrise. We also chose the right path to be faster. After arriving at Tegal Alun, we captured the moment and enjoyed God's extraordinary creation for a moment.
In Tegal Alun there are lots of beautiful Edelweiss flowers and the journey to the top is very close, it's just that we decided not to go to the top because there are only trees like a forest.
HUTAN MATI
Actually this Hutan Mati is located after Pondok Salada and before Tegal Alun. It's just that we chose the fast path that cuts through the forest to get to Tegal Alun.
But it would be a shame to come to Papandayan without enjoying the Hutan Mati. So we decided to go down the path on the left and that would lead us to the Forest of the Dead. Very exotic forest!
After we captured the moment, we went down to Pondok Salada to pack up our tents and get ready to go home. Don't forget to also visit the souvenir center.
That's my little story about Mount Papandayan. The first mountain I went to as a beginner. I hope you like my story.
Best Regards,
