While in Phuket a couple or so weeks ago , I saw this huge white Buddha sitting on top of a mountain called the Nakkerd Hills, I could see this big white Buddha glaring down at me from Karon Beach, I just had to take a drive up this hill to see this amazing Buddha front on, apparently this Buddha is the landmark of Phuket island standing at a height of 45 meters tall and can be seen as far as Phuket Town which is about 18km away.
From Phuket main road to reach the Big Buddha there is a 6km picturesque winding road that takes you through a couple of very small villages and a lots of lush green beautiful nature all the way up to Nakkerd Hill, it was a very enjoyable drive all the way up with some beautiful scenic views on the way looking over the hills.
Once you have reached the top of Nakkerd Hill, here you will see this massive 45 meter tall white Buddha, it's a mind blowing amazing site and from up here you can see as far as your eyes will allow you, with 360 degree views looking down at Phuket Town, Karon Beach, Chalong Bay and more we were so lucky on this day to have such a beautiful blue sky on the day we chose to drive up to see the Big Buddha considering it's monsoon season over here now.
From the moment we disembarked from our car, I could feel a very peaceful atmosphere around us, it was very quiet and hardly any one around, all you could hear were the sounds of these small bells tinkling away with the slight breeze of wind up on this high mountain and some Thai people drumming on this huge bell as they prayed for there good health and luck of fortune as the soft music of the dharma played in the background.
This Big Buddha was built in 2004 and measures 25 meters across at the base, the base and body of this big Buddha was done with tons of reinforced concrete and then all layered with beautiful white jade marble, when the sun shines of this jade marble you will see the most breathtaking views of this big Buddha up against the suns reflections.
Around the main big Buddha you will see a few other Buddha statues one in particular is a gold color this Buddha statue is made up of 20 tons of brass imagine the weight of such a smaller Buddha statue and you will also see several statues of famous Monks in there time of Monk-hood who have now pass away was all very impressive.
This big Buddha is the most popular attractions in Phuket and, I could see why standing in front of this powerful Buddha really made you feel spiritual and at peace and not only did this huge Buddha impress me but the 360 degree views from up here looking across Phuket island were just stunning just wished we could have stayed longer to see the sunset but we needed to get back to town.
This is a must see if your ever in Phuket but please do remember your visiting a very highly respected Buddha and even though it is on the outside on this beautiful hill don't come dressed in short skirts and T-shirts it's considered as offensive if you do there are sarong you can ask for at the donation store and it is free to go see this Big Buddha.
