Since I moved to the western suburbs of Melbourne, I have had a number of opportunities to visit around the area. I have been particularly impressed with the lovely towns here. Last weekend I was able to visit the Newport Lakes in another wonderful town- "Newport" and was impressed with its beauty. It was a perfect day to be outside, and the lakes park is the perfect place to be. 🙂
Newport town is another charming seaside town located on the western side of Melbourne. If you're looking for a day trip that won't take up too much time, the lake is the perfect destination. Though it's not very big, the reserve offers plenty to do and see.
Newport lakes were once a rubbish tip, but the council cleaned it up and made it into a natural reserve. They dug up the blue stone from the ground to make it more aesthetically pleasing. That's why the blue stone is found everywhere around the lake. It is a good formation and strong which makes it perfect for construction.
That sign must be number 8 presenting for something I guess :)
I highly recommend to read the full story of the lake here. From trash to treasure: a suburb's slice of tranquillity- The article was published 10 years ago and I found it very interesting to read.
Newport Lakes- Hobsons bay is a great place to walk and immerse in nature. It is located in the heart of Newport, just minutes from the center. The park offers a variety of trails for all levels of hikers, from easy to moderate. The area is now full of wildlife and is a popular spot for bird watching.
The transformation is amazing, and the view is now breathtaking. The Govt and local authority did a great job :)
The lakes area of the 33-hectare park has been extensively revegetated using native plants, with over 200 species of plants and 165 species of birds recorded here. Source
There are also plenty of benches and picnic tables for resting and enjoying the scenery. The best time to visit is early morning or evening when the crowds are smaller and the temperatures are cooler.
The lake is home to many different kinds of birds, fish and other wildlife, making it a great place for your kids to learn about nature. There are also plenty of picnic areas and BBQs around the lake, so you can make a day of it.
In the middle of the lake, you'll find a rock path that's perfect for a leisurely stroll. As you walk, you can take in the lovely sight of swans swimming and the peaceful surrounding. It's the perfect way to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature.
A couple of swans were seen swimming peacefully in the lake. The water rippled around them as they gracefully moved their necks back and forth. It was a beautiful sight to see. The swans looked so content and serene, almost as if they were in their own little world. It was a moment of pure joy and peace. I could just sit there for hours to enjoy the sight😍
It's great that the Newport Lake bird population is very diverse, with many different species of birds represented. The most common birds seen at the lake are ducks, geese, and swans, but there are also plenty of other birds. You can check out their name here. This variety of birds makes Newport Lake a great place for birdwatching.
We spotted a little blue tongue lizard on the way to our car. He was basking in the sun, and we stopped to take a picture. We had never seen a lizard up close before, and he was so cute! We watched him for a few minutes while giving him the way :)
If you're looking for a peaceful and picturesque nature walk around Melbourne, look no further than the Newport lake. The lake is a great addition to the already lovely towns in the western part of Melbourne.
