ELEKTROWNIA POWIŚLE (during the winter holidays) from a power station to one of the most modern shopping centers in Warsaw, Poland
Hello travelers from all over the world
Today's post I start by thanking the worldmappin team for the idea of organizing this first contest more December is a magical month where magical things happen, I couldn't stay away from this community so today I will share with you the experience I had last year exactly in December when I visited the capital of Poland, Warsaw.
The place we are going to go today is not just any place but a place that has an amazing history, ELEKTROWNIA POWIŚLE the most modern power plant at that time in Poland, but wait, we are not going to check if it still powers the city but we are going to see how it looks after more than a hundred years since its construction and see what we find on the spot.
I have to say again that Poland is amazing, it's a country that I didn't have too many expectations from (it didn't get too much publicity) but when I visited it already the second time it blew all my calculations out of the water, it has so many sensational cities.
I had read some information about this shopping center, and from what I saw I really found it interesting to visit, considering that we were in December 2023 and everything was dressed in festive clothes, I put on the map and this place.
I can't remember the name of the street but I know I got here after visiting the Copernicus Science Center (another place I recommend if you visit Warsaw), we didn't have too much walking.
If you are in Warsaw and you want to go to certain places in the city, I recommend you to use public transportation, it works impeccably.
Even if we were in the holiday season we didn't have crowded neither on the streets nor inside the shopping center, on one of the streets we found some globes, now I realized how nice it would have been to see a sticker with the community logo on those globes.
When I arrived in front of the shopping center I couldn't believe what I saw in front of my eyes, it's been a while since I've seen a place so well decorated, right in front of the center there was an ice rink, the joy of children and adults.
Before you take your first steps inside, here are some interesting facts.
Our history goes back to 1904. It was then that the local authorities announced a call for tenders for the construction of the power plant, which continued to be expanded in subsequent years, becoming one of the largest and most modern power plants in Poland.
The dynamic development of the facility was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During the occupation, the then-director of the power plant, Stanisław Skibniewski aka “Cubryna” hired people to protect them from roundups out in the streets. In 1944, the Powiśle Power Plant became the backdrop for the dramatic events of the Warsaw Uprising. It was here that the members of the resistance, mainly plant workers, worked tirelessly to keep the city supplied with power.
The power plant resumed its activity after the end of the war, only to officially cease generating power in 2001 after years of prosperity.
A new page in the history of the place started to be written 15 years later, when the site was acquired by Tristan Capital Partners and White Star Real Estate. From the very beginning, the authors of the redevelopment project wanted to breathe new life into the old walls of the site, changing the purpose of the post-industrial buildings while preserving their character. We’ve put a lot of effort into retaining as many original elements of the over 100-years-old structure, which we have eventually reopened for the inhabitants of Warsaw.
The historical value of the place was a rich source of inspiration for us. Every single element was treated with respect for its extraordinary historical value. We used traditional brick-baking methods. The items reclaimed from the power plant buildings were repurposed to become elements of the new facility’s unique interior design. The regeneration of the facility is perfectly in line with the global trend of restoring historic spaces that combine history with modernity and reshape urban landscapes.
After a few steps inside I was honestly a little confused, it was so beautifully decorated that I didn't know where to start exploring it, so with small steps we started to visit the shops and from time to time I tasted something sweet from what was sold there, I really appreciated that those who have refurbished this place have chosen to keep it as it once was.
I have chosen to share with you this place and especially to participate in the winter challenge considering that this place can be assimilated with a Christmas market.
THE END!
