Lake Firiza, a peaceful oasis in Maramures, Romania
Lately in Romania we've had some hot weather with temperatures even 40 degrees (maybe for some of you this is a common temperature, but for us it is a hard one to bear), so being on a mini vacation in Maramures we were looking for a place where we could relax but not be so hot.
The Internet was of great help, so we discovered Firiza Lake, after we saw some pictures of there we immediately went to see if it is the same in reality.
The accommodation was about 45 kilometers away, about an hour's drive.
From what I read on the internet there is a yacht club there, exactly what we were looking for, especially since this yacht club had a 100% electric boat and we clearly wanted a ride on the lake on a beautiful summer day.
Before we reached the lake area, we had a surprise on the side of the road, a big rock wall, I think made of andesite, and some climbers climbing on that rock wall.
Done, a few pictures and we went on to the lake, as I wrote this area of Maramures is a picturesque, not for nothing Maramures is one of the most beautiful areas in Romania, the place where customs and traditions are still strictly preserved.
The place being a yacht club also has a large parking lot, here we left our car, parking is free.
In order to have access to the lake we needed a special card, but the employees there were very nice and helped us to get a club membership card for which we paid 10lei/2euro.
Let me show you some information about the history of Lake Firiza.
One of the great achievements of the communist era for Baia Mare is the Firiza Dam, which was commissioned in 1964 and was built to supply Baia Mare with drinking water. In order to realize this huge construction, however, an entire neighborhood of the village of Firiza had to be displaced and the inhabitants of Firiza were offered other alternatives.
In the early 1960s, when Romania was under the rule of Gheorghe Gheorghiu Gheorghiu-dej, in Baia Mare, as in all cities, socialist industry grew spectacularly. Except that on the site of the reservoir there was a branch of the Firiza neighborhood before the dam was built, and a total of 50 families had to leave their homes. Locals in Firiza talk about a church being left at the bottom of the huge lake or about the lake being populated by a species of giant fish.
The dam designed by Aristide Teodorescu was built between 1961 and 1964. It is the first mushroom buttress dam realized in Romania. The height of the dam is 52 meters, the opening at the crest is 198 meters, the lake area is 113 hectares and it is three kilometers long and one kilometer wide. The dam currently supplies water to Baia Mare and beyond.
After the first steps here we discovered that we could rent SUP, paddle boats but unfortunately the electric boat was under maintenance and we couldn't have a ride on the lake.
But wait, we found an even more relaxing alternative, sunbathing on the deckchairs on the deck by the lake.
We were lucky that we got here quite early so we found plenty of free sun loungers but also a nice restaurant (by the way the food smelled very good, unfortunately we were full from breakfast).
My dears our visit to Lake Firiza has come to an end.
THE END!
