Old Jewish Cemetery and Pinkas Synagogue, a journey into a world of Jewish identity in Prague
Last year at the beginning of December I was on a mini vacation in the Czech capital, Prague, if you have been following my posts you could see that I have already posted a few blogs with amazing places in Prague.
Prague is a charming city, it was the first time we arrived here with our friends and to be honest from the information we had about this country we already had expectations about what we would find here.
Honestly I tell you after I drew the line when I ended my visit here Prague exceeded all my expectations, welcoming people, amazing places, fabulous atmosphere, all the ingredients for a successful holiday.
If you ask me if I will come back here again, the answer is only one, I wholeheartedly say go back to this town to discover it, especially since a good friend in the community pointed me to other amazing places.
We had our accommodation somewhere close to the centre, this is also the reason why we didn't use our own car to get around but public transport (it works very well).
Prague has so much to offer, I have tried to focus on what I considered most important, don't get me wrong here you will find many other amazing places.
We started the day with breakfast at the hotel (in a future post I will show you the hotel where we stayed) and then we took the tram to the center (the tram stop was 200m from the hotel).
Today I want to go together to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery and Pinkas Synagogue two places of great value for Prague in the Jewish Quarter.
Schedule and entrance fee
The price of an adult ticket that we paid was 350CZK/14,5euro/person, I don't know if the ticket is expensive or not, that's all I can tell you that it is worth coming here, also in the price of the ticket was included the visit of six sights listed on the entrance ticket.
Visiting hours are daily except on Saturdays or other Jewish holidays between 9-4:30 between November and March and 9-6 between April and October.
Let the exploration begin
We begin today's visit with one of Prague's oldest synagogues, which has survived to the present day, and we can admire Prague's living history over time.
The synagogue is unique in its own way, it was built in 1535 with the support of the Horowitz family, after the end of the Second World War the synagogue was turned into a memorial.
Why did I say it was unique?
On the inner walls of the synagogue are written over 80,000 names of the Jews who were exterminated here, I don't feel comfortable talking about that, especially since I had another unique experience when I visited Poland and the Auschwitz I and II concentration camp.
The synagogue is a place worth visiting, it is a place where we can see the history of those times, it is an amazing museum but most of all we must make sure that those times are never repeated and that that dark history remains just a memory.
I invite you to come upstairs to see the museum housed here.
We spent some time here and then with sadness in our hearts (I am more emotional and such places give me the creeps) we continued our visit to objective number 3, I forgot to tell you that the ticket we paid gave us access to 6 objectives, and today we opted to visit two of them.
Somehow from the narrow corridors we emerge into a courtyard full of funerary monuments (old stone crosses), yes you heard right stone crosses.
Yes, we arrived at the Old Jewish Cemetery, a Jewish cemetery that has been catalogued as one of the oldest in the world, this cemetery served the Jewish town which was quite large so at one point it became uninhabitable, the solution found was that the bodies were buried on top of each other, so we ended up here in the cemetery we can find 10 rows of graves.
Dear Friends, I end today's day of exploration at the Old Jewish Cemetery and Pinkas Synagogue in the Czech capital, Prague.
If you liked what you saw and read here please don't forget to give a LiKe, Follow, reBlog or a Comment, for all this I thank you, and until the next post I say goodbye.
