The Pauper's Cemetery, an emotionally charged place in Romania
Hello travelers
Have you ever visited a Cemetery of the Poor?
If you haven't done so so far, in today's post I want to take you with me and visit a cemetery of the poor together.
Yes, in Sighetul Marmatiei in Romania there is such a place, maybe such a place will not be included on the short list of sights to visit for some of you, but for me it is a special place where from time to time the descendants of those buried here come and mourn their dead.
The Cemetery of the Poor is part of a very important memorial also here in Sighetul Marmatiei, the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and Resistance.
This place is very well equipped, even has a parking lot for cars and is free to visit.
What's so special about this place?
First of all, we don't know exactly how many people were buried here, nor the identity of many of them.
It was first used to bury poor people but during the communist period it was also used to bury political prisoners or people in concentration camps.
Even those who died in the Sighet prison and those executed during the Second World War were buried there, but unfortunately there is not much data about the identity of those who sleep their final resting place here.
The communist period has put its mark on this place bringing it to the status of a ghost cemetery, many of the documents that showed the identity of those people have been destroyed.
Visiting this place is done in one direction, the gentleman who greeted us at the entrance suggested us to visit this way this cemetery to have an amazing surprise at the end.
So I went in the direction indicated by that gentleman, after a few steps we already arrived in front of some funerary monuments I think in andesite or marble where on the foundation stone were written many names.
Curious I approached to read some of them, curious was the fact that many of the names written there were not of Romanian origin, I failed to find an explanation in this regard.
Depending on how curious you are to discover the history of this place, your time among the tombs and shrines can last as long as you like.
The tour of the cemetery ends with the Gate of Memory (I compared it to an open book), here after climbing the "stairs of life", we reached the bell tower.
Here I had the biggest surprise, wow, this cemetery has the geographical shape of Romania, but to convince me even better I raised the drone to see it perfectly, and yes, the fence on the edge of the cemetery seen from above is identical to the map of Romania.
My dear I hope that this post did not sadden you and that you have had a beautiful history lesson I tell you that we have reached the end.
If you want to learn more about the history of this place you can find it here.
THE END!
