The word stupa is believed to be derived from Sanskrit and Pali which means 'heap'. Initially, by placing the remains of Tathagata in the central part, they were given a circular shape by pouring clay stones over it. In these such masonry of bricks and stones was done from outside so that there could be no effect of weather on these stupas in the open. In stupas there is no sanctum sanctorum like a temple. The stupa built by Ashoka at Sanchi was distinct from the earlier stupas.
