| Sometimes you simply need to step away from everyday life for a while. And when your better half is caught up in appointments and busy days, it becomes a good opportunity to visit friends. Just sitting together, talking, sharing memories and speaking about things you rarely take enough time for otherwise. On April 12th, a Sunday, I set off on the road — eight days until April 19th, 2026. No strict route, more a loose idea: avoiding larger cities, staying off the highways as much as possible and following country roads and federal roads instead. After only a few kilometers, that plan was already gone. Not because of traffic or construction sites, but because several towns had blocked roads due to local celebrations. So I ended up back on the A61. Cruise control at 85 km/h, hardly any traffic, just quietly covering distance without thinking too much about it. My first stop was the Moselle Valley Bridge. I honestly don’t know how many times I’ve crossed it before — probably countless times. I’ve also driven through the valley below more than once. But this time I wanted to look at it consciously from a different perspective. After all, it is the second-highest highway bridge in Germany. | Manchmal muss man einfach mal wieder dem Alltag entspringen. Und wenn die bessere Hälfte vollgepackt mit Terminen ist, bietet sich das als Gelegenheit, Freunde zu besuchen. Einfach mal zusammensitzen, reden, Erinnerungen teilen und über Dinge sprechen, für die man sich sonst viel zu selten Zeit nimmt. Am 12. April, ein Sonntag, machte ich mich auf den Weg – acht Tage bis zum 19.04.2026. Keine große Route, eher eine lose Idee: größere Städte meiden, möglichst ohne Autobahn, dafür über Land- und Bundesstraßen. Schon nach wenigen Kilometern war dieser Plan allerdings Geschichte. Nicht wegen Verkehr oder Baustellen, sondern weil mehrere Ortschaften die Straßen wegen lokaler Feierlichkeiten gesperrt hatten. Also doch auf die A61. Tempomat auf 85 km/h, kaum Verkehr, einfach ruhig Kilometer machen ohne ständig nachdenken zu müssen. Mein erster Halt war die Moseltalbrücke. Ich weiß nicht, wie oft ich schon über sie gefahren bin – vermutlich unzählige Male. Auch unten im Tal bin ich schon unterwegs gewesen. Aber dieses Mal wollte ich sie mir bewusst aus einer anderen Perspektive anschauen. Schließlich ist sie die zweithöchste Autobahnbrücke Deutschlands. |
| I pulled into the motorway parking area near Dieblich-Winningen and suddenly found myself almost directly beneath the end of the bridge. From below, a structure like this feels completely different. When driving across it, you barely notice its height of 136 meters and its length of 935 meters. Only standing next to it do you really realize how massive and at the same time almost unreal it actually is. | Ich fuhr bei Dieblich-Winningen auf den Autobahnparkplatz und stand plötzlich fast direkt am Ende der Brücke. Von unten wirkt so ein Bauwerk völlig anders. Wenn man darüber fährt, nimmt man die Höhe von 136 Metern und die Länge von 935 Metern kaum wahr. Erst daneben merkt man, wie massiv und gleichzeitig fast unwirklich sie eigentlich ist. |
| After a coffee, I continued on. Another forty kilometers on the motorway, then back onto smaller roads again. My original destination was a registered motorhome stop in the Westerwald region, more precisely in Westerburg. But when I arrived, there it was: a sign saying “No parking for camping vehicles.” | Nach einem Kaffee ging es weiter. Noch etwa vierzig Kilometer Autobahn, dann wieder runter auf kleinere Straßen. Ziel war eigentlich ein eingetragener Stellplatz im Westerwald, genauer gesagt in Westerburg. Dort angekommen: Schild „Parkverbot für Campingfahrzeuge“. |
| So, a new search and a new place: Hachenburg. A free motorhome stop for eight vehicles, right next to a hotel, opposite the castle park and not far from the castle itself. Two spots were already occupied. I parked somewhere in the middle, and little by little the row began to fill up. | Also neue Suche, neuer Ort: Hachenburg. Ein kostenloser Stellplatz für acht Mobile direkt an einem Hotel, gegenüber vom Schlosspark und nicht weit vom Schloss entfernt. Zwei Plätze waren bereits belegt. Ich stellte mich irgendwo mittig dazu und nach und nach füllte sich die Reihe. |
| Later on, I walked through the castle park, the old town and around the castle itself. Hachenburg felt calm to me, almost understated. Not a town that pushes itself loudly into the foreground, but rather a place you slowly discover over time. | Später ging ich noch durch den Schlosspark, die Altstadt und rund um das Schloss. Hachenburg wirkte auf mich ruhig, fast unaufgeregt. Keine Stadt, die sich laut in den Vordergrund drängt, sondern eher ein Ort, den man langsam entdeckt. |
| The old town, with its half-timbered houses, narrow alleys and small transitions between open squares and quiet corners, almost felt like a self-contained space. Much of it dates back to the period after the town fires of the 17th century, yet the place never feels museum-like. More like a town that has managed to keep its own rhythm. | Die Altstadt mit ihren Fachwerkhäusern, engen Gassen und kleinen Übergängen zwischen offenen Plätzen und ruhigen Ecken wirkte fast wie ein geschlossener Raum. Vieles stammt aus der Zeit nach den Stadtbränden des 17. Jahrhunderts, und trotzdem fühlt sich der Ort nicht museal an. Eher wie eine Stadt, die ihren Rhythmus behalten hat. |
| Of course, the castle is especially present throughout the town. Originally built as a fortress in the 12th century, it was rebuilt as a baroque castle after the fire of 1654. Slightly elevated on a basalt cone, it shapes the entire silhouette of the town. Today, it houses the University of Applied Sciences of the Deutsche Bundesbank — an unusual combination of historical scenery and modern use. | Besonders präsent ist natürlich das Schloss. Ursprünglich eine Burg aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, wurde es nach dem Brand von 1654 als Barockschloss neu aufgebaut. Es liegt leicht erhöht auf einem Basaltkegel und prägt die gesamte Silhouette der Stadt. Heute befindet sich dort die Hochschule der Deutschen Bundesbank – eine ungewöhnliche Mischung aus historischer Kulisse und moderner Nutzung. |
| Right behind it, the castle park almost seamlessly fades into quieter green spaces and wooded areas. Those transitions are exactly what I like about places like this: just a few steps, and the whole atmosphere changes completely. | Direkt dahinter geht der Schlosspark fast fließend in ruhigere Grünflächen und Waldbereiche über. Genau diese Übergänge mag ich an solchen Orten: ein paar Schritte und der Eindruck verändert sich komplett. |
| And somewhere between those paths, the old buildings and the quiet evening, the feeling of truly being on the road slowly began to settle in. | Und irgendwo zwischen diesen Wegen, den alten Gebäuden und dem ruhigen Abend kam langsam das Gefühl an, wirklich unterwegs zu sein. |

| The motorhome stop in Hachenburg is located directly next to the castle park, opposite the castle and only a few steps away from the old town. It is free to use and designed for around eight motorhomes. Electricity and fresh water are available. Water costs €1 for 1ß0 liters, electricity €0,25 for 1 KWh. Greywater disposal and cassette toilet disposal are possible. Service and disposal station Holiday Clean approximately 500 m away. The public toilets in the nearby castle garden are open 24 hours a day and included for visitors staying at the site. There are no showers, though. The surrounding area also offers several leisure activities, including hiking and cycling trails, mini golf, as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. | Der Stellplatz in Hachenburg liegt direkt am Schlosspark, gegenüber vom Schloss und nur wenige Schritte von der Altstadt entfernt. Er ist kostenlos nutzbar und für etwa acht Mobile ausgelegt. Strom und Wasser sind vorhanden. Wasser kostet 1 € für 100 Liter, Strom 0,25 € für 1 KWh. Grauwasser und Kassettentoilette können entsorgt werden. Ver- und Entsorgung Holiday Clean ca. 500 m Entfernung. Die öffentlichen Toiletten im angrenzenden Burggarten sind rund um die Uhr geöffnet und im Stellplatz enthalten. Duschen gibt es allerdings keine. | The site itself is illuminated, dogs are allowed and Wi-Fi is available. Despite its central location, it felt surprisingly quiet in the evening. Many things can easily be reached on foot — the old town, the castle park or simply a short walk through the surrounding area. What I liked was that the place does not feel like a purely functional overnight stop. With the castle park right next to it and the old town only a short walk away, it almost feels as if the town continues a little further, even once you are already back at the motorhome. | Der Platz selbst ist beleuchtet, Hunde sind erlaubt und WLAN ist verfügbar. Trotz der zentralen Lage wirkte es am Abend überraschend ruhig. Vieles lässt sich zu Fuß erreichen – Altstadt, Schlosspark oder einfach ein kleiner Spaziergang durch die Umgebung. Was ich angenehm fand: Der Stellplatz wirkt nicht wie ein reiner Zweckort zum Übernachten. Durch den Schlosspark daneben und die direkte Nähe zur Altstadt fühlt es sich eher so an, als würde der Ort noch ein Stück weitergehen, selbst wenn man schon wieder am Mobil angekommen ist. |
