Hoy la mirada se posa en lugares donde la ciudad busca diversión, donde Matanzas intenta ofrecer un respiro.

Matanzas es hermosa, sí. Pero no abundan espacios de esparcimiento. Algunos de los que existen muestran señales de desgaste, del tiempo, del paso constante de quienes los frecuentan. Esta vez me detuve en dos lugares que están cerca uno del otro, diferentes pero conectados por la misma necesidad: ofrecer un punto de encuentro y alegría.

El primero es la piscina infantil en Playa La Caridad, un centro muy querido. Su agua refleja el sol, los niños corren, chapotean, ríen. Es un espacio pensado para el disfrute familiar, aunque a veces las actividades sean escasas. La rutina, la falta de recursos, el paso de los años, todo eso se percibe. Pero cuando los niños juegan, el lugar revive. Es un recuerdo de generaciones que vinieron, se bañaron, aprendieron a nadar, y que vuelven con sus propios hijos.

A pocos pasos, el segundo espacio es la famosa discoteca La Salsa.

Este sitio tiene algo que lo hace único: combina un espacio para comer y otro para bailar. Funciona todas las semanas y ofrece diferentes actividades, desde discotemba para los no tan jovenes hasta funciones más relajadas. En un contexto donde no abundan discotecas de ese estilo, este lugar se convierte en refugio. Aquí la ciudad se libera, baila, celebra.

Por costumbre, en estos espacios se celebran reuniones de graduados de universidades, vocacionales y otros centros, y también fiestas organizadas por empresas para sus trabajadores. No son solo lugares de ocio; son puntos de cohesión social. Permiten a la ciudad y a sus habitantes respirar, incluso por un instante, y dejar de lado las preocupaciones diarias.

Matanzas no solo necesita infraestructura cultural o artística; necesita lugares donde se viva, donde se sienta la comunidad, donde la gente pueda compartir, reír, bailar y moverse al ritmo de su propia ciudad.

La piscina y La Salsa son ejemplos modestos de esto, pero fundamentales. La ciudad se refleja en ellos: a veces desgastada, a veces animada, siempre en movimiento.

Caminar entre estos espacios me hizo pensar en la importancia de lo cotidiano, de lo que muchas veces pasa desapercibido. No siempre se necesita un monumento o un parque histórico; a veces basta un lugar para jugar o bailar.

Spaces for a City That Breathes

Hello #worldmappin community, once again I return to this community.
This series is born from walking without haste and looking with intention.
Today the view rests on places where the city seeks entertainment, where Matanzas tries to offer a moment of relief.

Matanzas is beautiful, yes. But spaces for recreation are not abundant. Some of those that exist show signs of wear, of time, of the constant passage of those who frequent them. This time I stopped at two places that are close to each other, different but connected by the same need: to offer a meeting point and joy.

The first is the children’s pool at Playa La Caridad, a very beloved place. Its water reflects the sun, children run, splash, laugh. It is a space designed for family enjoyment, although sometimes activities are scarce. Routine, lack of resources, the passing of the years — all of that can be perceived. But when children play, the place comes alive again. It is a memory of generations who came, swam, learned to swim, and who return now with their own children.

A few steps away, the second space is the famous La Salsa nightclub.

This place has something that makes it unique: it combines a space for eating and another for dancing. It operates every week and offers different activities, from discotemba for those who are not so young to more relaxed events. In a context where nightclubs of this kind are not abundant, this place becomes a refuge. Here the city lets go, dances, celebrates.

By tradition, these spaces host reunions of graduates from universities, vocational schools and other institutions, and also parties organized by companies for their workers. They are not only places of leisure; they are points of social cohesion. They allow the city and its inhabitants to breathe, even if only for a moment, and set aside daily concerns.

Matanzas does not only need cultural or artistic infrastructure; it needs places where life happens, where community can be felt, where people can share, laugh, dance, and move to the rhythm of their own city.

The pool and La Salsa are modest examples of this, but fundamental ones. The city is reflected in them: sometimes worn, sometimes lively, always in motion.

Walking between these spaces made me think about the importance of the everyday, of what often goes unnoticed. A monument or a historic park is not always necessary; sometimes a place to play or dance is enough.
