The word Spartan Trail kept banging on my ears last year and had to control myself from not breaking my phone as posts and blogs about this trail kept on popping out on my socials. Never thought that time was the chance to visit it and I just didn't decipher the sign. In the upland areas of Cebu City, there is a trail that squeezed in on its very soil that has became a very popular mountain route in the city that connects the towns of Banawa, Buhisan, and finally Pamutan. Guides during that time explained to us how this trail borrows some spaces for hikers to hike through on the Central Cebu Protected Landscape, which is an important supply-intended reserve that brings water to the city and is primarily one of the sources of it. Hiking in Spartan Trail means bumping on river crossings, narrow paths, and steep trails, which adds an adventure sense to hikers as it is geographically demanding to people. The lowlands of the city is not cooler compared on this trail. If you are lucky enough, you'll meet cooler winds and mists on the trail especially on early morning that you won't experience on the lowlands of the city.
In the city, the Spartan trail has gained relevance and popularity in the city which eventually made it become one of the most famous hiking trails in Cebu. Anywhere and anyhow, you can see information about this trail wherever you go in the city. Many Cebuanos want a challenging hiking activity and a rugged trail experience, which by the time this trail was opened, many of us found it intriguing as promised to be a different trail and no other can replicate when it comes to its adventure and challenges. If you were to ask me, one thing that made this trail different from others in the city ws it's accessibility and adventure that interests hikers and fitness-focused individuals that prefer a more calm and scenic hiking experience rather than crowded or strict one. Here, we have guide, but your movement is not restricted and you are encouraged to feel the challenges with safety procedures. Environmental awareness is what this destination promotes , as it borrows spaces from protected areas of Cebu, and it helps tourists become environmentally aware and responsible on their doings as they navigate it.
I asked one of our fellow colleagues who happened to hike on this trial multiple times it's history or origin. I have learnt there are no formally recorded history about this trail but some localfolks claimed this one was once an ancient footpaths used by farmers and hunters who search for foods on the upland areas and other reasons they could use the upland sites. Decades passed and this normal trail used for ancient movement became a trail for hiking used by modern people who are enthusiastic to maintain their healthy lifestyle. It is more now on exercising rather than ancient movement like searching for foods and hunting. People who visited here made this trail more popular and it is emphasized as its hiking quality grew with its tourism identity.
I cant complete this travel blog without telling you what activities you can actually do in this popular destination. First, you can do hiking, obviously. Also, you can use this for your endurance training sessions, running, and other hiking challenges. Nature enjoyment is another one you can do here as it opens door for hikers to observe the whole landscape, hear the sounds of the gushing trees, see the greens of the trails as you move along, smell the natural aroma of nature, and touch the texture of native plants and trees. Trekking and photography are also done just like what we did last year and you can find streams perfect for trekking.
The location of Spartan Trail is specifically in the upland areas of Banawa, extending towards Pamutan and Buhisan in Cebu City. Assume you are at the city proper where most hikers begin their trip. You can ride a jeepney, motorcycle taxi, or even a private vehicle heading to Banawa and ask to be dropped off near areas close to Paseo Arcenas or nearby subdivisions that serve as common access points. From there, you will walk your way up to locate the trailhead, which may require asking locals or following GPS-based hiking maps since the entrance is not always obvious for first-timers. The trail usually ends in the Pamutan or Buhisan side, where you can hire a habal-habal ride going back to the city, which many local drivers are already familiar with. I recommend starting early in the morning for a safer and more comfortable hike since the trail can be confusing and physically demanding. If you got there, welcome, you just earned your way through one of Cebu’s toughest trails.
If you decide to go here, you are walys welcome to experience this famous and running trail in our Cebu City. Just dont forget to bring 2 liters of water and never share it if you want to survive. Wear sunscreen and appropriate gears because prevention is better than cure. I hope you enjoyed my blog this time, and I hope to see you soon in my future adventures. Thank you for reading and sparing a little time.
