South Africa is back on lockdown level 4 and as Gauteng is currently a hotspot, we aren’t even allowed to leave the province. Since school holidays are 4 weeks long, we decided to whisk the kids away for a few days in the Gauteng bushveld!
The Dinokeng Game Reserve is a large wildlife sanctuary in the province of Gauteng, South Africa.. The reserve is the only wildlife sanctuary in Gauteng that offers Big five game and it covers an area of approximately 21,000 hectares.
The weather in Dinokeng is warmer and the children were able to enjoy the ice cold water and slides that the resort offers. The resort has a total of 6 super tubes, 8 swimming pools, including 2 heated swimming pools.
Being "boring" grownups, we did have a little more sense than the kids... While they were experiencing the freezing adrenaline rush of the colorful slides, we spent our afternoons baking in the comforting winter sun and enjoyed watching their crazy antics!
During the evenings we built massive bonfires to ward of the creeping winter cold, we even taught the kids how to build their own fire and put them in charge of dinner one evening.
Every night the kids built their own desserts, by toasting marshmallows in the sizzling flames, making smores and delectable, melted chocolate cones.
We had a bit of cold weather one afternoon, but it didn't stop the kids from splashing in the pools! Here they are in the warm, enclosed swimming pool, the only pool that we, as adults, actually were brave enough to enjoy as well!
The resort has a restaurant and a bar as well, but because of lockdown regulations only allowing takeaways, we feasted on their delicious meals and ice creams next to the pools.
At our accommodation unit, the bucks came right to the door and crunched on crispy lettuce and leaves that we fed them.
On our last day, we had breakfast together outside, watching the bushveld sun rising, warming us up, to prepare us for our final day of sun and fun.
#### What better way to spend this lockdown, than to take a break away with family, fires roaring, outside in the fresh bushveld air?
Thank you for reading my post, I hope you enjoyed it, we had an amazing, much needed break from the pandemic we are currently facing!
