Portugal is a country of exceptionally beautiful and pristine beaches. Here the beach recreation is raised into kinda cult status, which might appear strange, as for the most tourists who come to a beach, the most, but the most of the most important thing is the water temperature. Yes, the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal is not a warm, ( the temps in Portugal rarely rise above 21-22C), but the coolness of the ocean waves are more than offset by the natural beauty, the purity of the sand and the power of the sea cliffs.
The beaches of Portugal are above all an experience of being part of a merge with the nature and at the same time feeling the grandeur of the Mighty Ocean. A trip to Portugal would not be complete without a visit to the beach: to fully grasp this country, you have to get out on the ocean, breathe its scents and hear the sound of its waves.
So I picked up few of the beaches in Lisbon area, I want to show you more in details.

This beach is one of the best and largest beaches of the Lisbon Riviera, with a 1.5 km long sandy coastline. The beach is easily accessible from the center of Lisbon. From the Caisse Sodrรฉ ( the South Garden ) station it is only 20 minutes by train. The trains run frequently.
Carcavelos beach is the most popular beach of the Lisbon coast and is much bigger than all the beaches in the Riviera it has medium waves for surfing.
There are numerous beach bars, restaurants and stores along the beach, and during the summer there is always a lively atmosphere.
Everyone can get lessons in surfing and windsurfing, so there are always a lot of young people in these areas.
The fort below on the pic is a cool attraction that was built 5 centuries ago. It serves nowadays as a home of Ministry of Defence.
There is a nice pedestrian area that goes alongside the coast and it is stretching all the way from downtown Lisbon to nearly Cabo do Roca (the Westernmost point of Continental Europe).
It is always crowded during the season. There are numerous bars, cafes and restaurants along the promenade. The beach is equipped with everything you need. Nearby there is a large parking lot.
Just FYI the pics were taken in different season and timings, so here the beach is too empty. This pic was taken in April.

Summer of winter, its always green in Portugal!
That is the main road and promenade that runs through the whole Riviera.

Sintra's "Big Beach" is actually not exactly a Lisbon beach but as the distances are minimal I did include it in my list.
Thess beaches are kinda cool beaches, but I read that they were once voted as one of the best in Europe by a prominent newspaper and were ranked second on The Independent's list of Portugal's 10 best beaches. To be honest I do not think that they should be included in such a list just for few major things: super cold water, dangerous currents and unfriendly waves, and cold wind blowing off at all times!
So both beahces are located near Sintra and just 15 km north of Guincho Beach, they are sandwiched between high cliffs and have clear blue water.
Praia da Adraga is the smaller one, it is more secluded, and romantic by the sunset. It is to be reached only by car.

At a distance of 5 km from Cascais is the most famous sports beach in the Lisbon area, Guincho. It is located right next to Cabo do Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe.
This is one of the most majestic beaches not only in Lisbon area but overall in whole Portugal.
Guincho is known for its constant winds, which make it a popular surf spot not only in Portugal, but also in Europe. In the "7 Wonders: Beaches of Portugal" contest, Guincho was recognized as the best beach for the sport. Guincho has several surf centers that provide equipment for rent.
The water is very clear and quite cold (+20 ยบC). Its extremely turbulent place with lot of waves that are gorgeously dangerous and these are what attract the surfers, who are always very numerous here.
Although Ginshu is not particularly well suited to swimming, there are plenty of non-sports sun-worshippers here too, as it's always fun to watch the surfers and admire the scenery.

Estoril is a trendy resort with many beaches, plenty of restaurants, cafeterias and stores. It is also a major center of Portuguese gambling and tourism industry, with many high-level hotels and nightclubs.
There is also one of the biggest casinos in Europe with an impressive entertainment program, and its always buzzing up with people here. Lovers of outdoor activities will find a variety of water sports, golf courses, excellent opportunities for horseback riding and fishing, as well as many water parks!

One of the most famous resorts in Portugal, Cascais is the center of the Portuguese Riviera! There will soon a post about Cascais and Estoril ))
Cascais beaches are as always a lovely walk. The weather, the water, the beaches and the good restaurants are all amazing.
Walking along the beaches is a great activity, either by bike or on foot. There's always something to do, and plenty of authentic restaurants with great food.
