Visiting the National Pantheon and the Mausoleum of the Liberator / Visitando el Panteón Nacional y el Mausoleo del Libertador

Some time ago, I had the opportunity to visit Caracas, and on that occasion, I was able to explore various parts of the city; specifically, I discovered the wonders of a rather unique historic center, as it is an environment where we experience a constant interplay of emotions, given that the vestiges of the colonial city stand face-to-face with a modernity that even transcends our own time.

Hace algún tiempo tuve la oportunidad de visitar Caracas y en esa ocasión pude recorrer diversos espacios de la ciudad; específicamente descubrí las maravillas de un centro histórico bastante peculiar, puesto que se trata de un entorno en donde vivimos en un cruce constante de emociones, puesto que los vestigios de la ciudad colonial se encuentran de frente con una modernidad que incluso va más allá de nuestro tiempo.

But beyond these urban features, there is one place that always eluded me—for one reason or another, I was never able to visit it—and that is the National Pantheon, a space designed to honor those men and women who gave their lives for the well-being and glory of the homeland. Here we can find heroes of the independence struggles, great writers, prominent scientists, and notable artists, all of them in an atmosphere of honor and grandeur.

Pero más allá de estos rasgos urbanos, un lugar que siempre me fue esquivo, ya que por alguna razón u otra nunca estaba disponible, se trata del Panteón Nacional, un espacio diseñado para enaltecer a aquellos hombres y mujeres que dieron su vida en pro del bienestar y en el enaltecimiento de la patria. Acá podemos encontrar héroes de las luchas independentistas, grandes escritores, prominentes científicos y artistas notables, todos ellos bajo un entorno de honorabilidad y grandeza.

Upon discovering that on this occasion the cemetery’s gates were open to the public, I didn’t hesitate to go there, to walk through those arches and discover the true crown jewel of northern downtown Caracas. I found it incredible that admission was free and even more so that the entire space is perfectly preserved, maintaining its original style and with every detail meticulously cared for.

Al descubrir que en esta oportunidad las puertas del panteón se encontraban abiertas al público, no dudé en acercarme, para de esta manera cruzar esos arcos y descubrir la verdadera joya de la corona del centro norte de Caracas. Me pareció increíble que la entrada fuera gratuita y aún más que todo el espacio se conserve de manera perfecta, manteniendo su estilo original y cuidando cada detalle.

The floor is made of marble, and the layout resembles that of a three-nave church, with side chapels and enormous frescoes on the ceiling depicting epic scenes from the struggle for independence. As you walk through, you come across small inscriptions on the floor, which indicate the resting place of each national hero. There is no need to place flowers or set up altars everywhere, as simplicity and elegance are also signs of respect and admiration.

El piso es de mármol, la configuración del espacio es la de una iglesia de tres naves, con capillas laterales y en el techo enormes frescos que recrean escenas épicas de las luchas independentistas. A medida que uno va caminando, se encuentra con pequeñas inscripciones en el piso, las cuales muestran el lugar de descanso de cada prócer. No es necesario colocar flores ni generar altares por todos lados, ya que la sobriedad y la elegancia también son un signo de respeto y admiración.

The side chapels do have slightly larger spaces, where we can find several monuments, among which we can highlight the one housing the heroes of the Federal War, one commemorating General Urdaneta, another reviving the figure of General Santiago Mariño, and one that soberly honors the figure of Dr. José María Vargas.

Las capillas laterales sí cuentan con espacios un poco más amplios, en donde podemos encontrar algunos monumentos, dentro de los cuales podemos destacar aquel en donde se encuentran los héroes de la guerra federal, uno que recuerda al general Urdaneta, otro que revive la figura del general Santiago Mariño o uno que sobriamente enaltece a la figura del doctor José María Vargas.

We also find spaces with a slightly stronger sentimental value, such as the open cenotaph awaiting the unaccounted-for remains of General Francisco de Miranda, or the one that, with nostalgia, does not lose hope that one day the remains of General Antonio José de Sucre, the great Marshal of Ayacucho, will return to the homeland.

También encontramos espacios con un valor sentimental un poco más fuerte, como por ejemplo el cenotafio abierto que espera por los restos no encontrados del General Francisco de Miranda, o aquel que con nostalgia no pierde la esperanza en que algún día regresen a la patria los restos del General Antonio José de Sucre, el gran Mariscal de Ayacucho.

The energy that emanates from this place is truly powerful; it’s not like walking into a museum or coming across numerous works of art; here, you can feel firsthand the essence of those men and women who marked a turning point in their historical era. Silence is the accomplice to those epic battles, great adventures, and ingenious inventions, which today are recounted as the glories of an entire nation.

La energía que se desprende de este lugar es realmente muy fuerte; no es como entrar a un museo ni encontrarse con numerosas obras de arte; acá uno puede sentir en carne propia la esencia de esos hombres y mujeres que marcaron un antes y un después en su momento histórico. El silencio es el cómplice de esas épicas batallas, grandes aventuras e inventos ingeniosos, los cuales hoy en día se narran como las glorias de una nación entera.

Some time ago, the spot where the main altar should be was crowned by the sarcophagus that held the remains of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, but now that place looks somewhat different; prominent names guide us down a corridor that spans entire eras. We leave behind a style that is perhaps a bit eclectic to enter a mausoleum with postmodern features.

Hace un tiempo atrás, el lugar en donde debería estar el altar mayor se encontraba coronado por el sarcófago que resguardaba los restos del Libertador Simón Bolívar, pero ahora ese lugar se encuentra un tanto distinto; nombres prominentes nos escoltan hacia un pasillo que atraviesa épocas completas. Dejamos atrás un estilo quizás un tanto ecléctico para adentrarnos en un mausoleo de características posmodernas.

We find ourselves in a completely different atmosphere, with very distinctive lighting and a deep black floor; in the background, the colors and banners of the Bolivarian nations stand out, and right in the center we can see the permanent honor guard, who stand watch over the sarcophagus housing the remains of the Liberator Simón Bolívar.

Nos encontramos con un ambiente totalmente distinto, una iluminación muy peculiar y un piso profundamente negro; al fondo se realzan los colores y los estandartes de las naciones bolivarianas y justo en el centro podemos observar a la guardia de honor permanente, quienes custodian el sarcófago que resguarda los restos del libertador Simón Bolívar.

In general terms, this is a space where we are awed by its grandeur and splendor. A truly monumental work was built here, one that breaks with established styles and compels us to create a space that seeks to convey power, honor, glory, and grandeur. I believe that, despite creating a stark contrast with its surroundings, the idea was always very clear from the start: the Liberator is the foundation of the entire nation; his ideas and victories laid the groundwork for a republic that strives to march ever forward toward the future in pursuit of full freedom and the comprehensive development of its entire society.

En términos generales, este es un espacio para doblegarnos por su grandeza y esplendor. Aquí se construyó una obra realmente titánica, en donde se rompe con el estilo preestablecido y nos impulsa a hacer un espacio que busca transmitir poder, honor, gloria y grandeza. Creo que, a pesar de generar un contraste enorme con su entorno, la idea siempre estuvo muy clara desde un principio: el libertador es el inicio de toda la nación; sus ideas y victorias forjaron las bases de la república que intenta marchar siempre hacia el futuro en búsqueda de la libertad plena y el desarrollo integral de toda su sociedad.

It’s incredible how, in a single space, we can find so many details and symbols—from coats of arms engraved in glass and statues with realistic faces to large paintings that commemorate entire lives—all woven together by the common thread of history and shared sentiment.

Es increíble cómo en un solo espacio podemos encontrar tantos detalles y simbolismos, desde escudos grabados en vidrio, estatuas con rostros realistas, hasta grandes pinturas que rememoran vidas enteras, todo esto bajo el hilo conductor de la historia y el sentimiento común.

After many attempts during this visit to Caracas, I managed to discover this place, which I can only describe as magically incredible. I returned home very satisfied and fully convinced that this city hides beautiful spots, just waiting for curious and adventurous visitors to discover them, so they can take home wonderful memories and experiences worth their weight in gold.

Después de muchos intentos en esta visita a Caracas, logré descubrir este espacio que solamente pudiera catalogar como mágicamente increíble. Regresó a casa muy satisfecho y plenamente convencido de que esta ciudad esconde espacios hermosos, los cuales solo esperan a que visitantes curiosos y aventureros los descubran, para esta manera poder llevarse recuerdos maravillosos y experiencias que valen oro.
