Welcome to a big Wednesday Walk for my birthday weekend in Montreal! If has been over a decade since I last visited La Belle Province and far too long to stay away. I love the old stone buildings and the sidewalks busy with people speaking mostly french. This is an upscale steakhouse we visited for some Beef Wellington and there was even a Twitter Twuck parked out front!
For this trip, we hopped on the train for 6 hours from Toronto like we were European or something. I usually drive where I go so the train was a treat and so much easier than gassing up and watching cars on the highway for that long.
Apparently it had been -16 the night before and spent the day snowing so it was looking pretty wintery when we hopped off at Gare Central.
On the walk to the hotel, I stopped to enjoy the old architecture sitting right next to more modern in a nice dance of eras.
As you do sometimes in Montreal, we headed out to a pub to catch the hockey game. I enjoy watching hockey on TV and the Canadiens are on the road in Toronto so why not join the locals in cheering?
As one also does in Montreal, we enjoyed a bit of Quebecois craft beer! This time a nice hazy IPA x3.
So much neat things to see walking between establishments for dinner and drinks. These sparkling cars seem like something out of Grand Theft Auto all gathered under the big bright circle.
You really can't miss it and it apparently changes colour. I didn't notice til seeing the pictures. Maybe too much beer.
One of the reasons for visiting this weekend was Montreal Comicon. A wild gathering of nerds of all feathers. I have a whole separate post with all the story and costumes on tap for later this week.
The next night, we were walking again but this time toward another final destination. We made sure to stop on the way to get a classic Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich at Dunn's. Right next door is the Dominion Bar which serves great food and fancy cocktails. In the doorway is my brother sparking up a little lettuce.
cloudy and snowy on our walk but plenty of lights and parks along the way plenty of people seem to be enjoying.
Finally, we are at the local cathedral of hockey, The Bell Centre. I remember going to the Forum decades ago but this has been the home of the team since 1996. Almost 30 years? Where has the time gone?!
Inside, the home crowd is excited for the game and the pregame festivities are quite the show.
The home team pressed but a few minutes of defensive lapse put them on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Sitting in the lower bowl in Montréal costs a pretty penny but it was worth it for my favourite team on my birthday weekend.
Thank you for travelling to Montreal with me for the weekend! My first and hopefully not last #WorldMappin post!
