I grew up in the barracks and believe me there is no day that passes by without hearing stories from neighbors. There is always a drama to watch or stories to listen to .
I was sitting at home this afternoon with my mom peeling melon that would be used later in the day to prepare Egusi soup. While peeling it, a woman knocked on the door and before I could answer and check who it was, she barged in angrily and sat on an empty sofa near my mum in the living room.
I and my mum turned and stared at her speechless. Her little drama got us wondering what was happening. My mum finally broke the silence.
My mum: Mummy Gee what happened?
Mummy Gee: Mummy Tola I don't like nonsense oo.
My mum: Tell me what happened nah? Why are you looking all worked up and angry?
Mummy Gee: Why are people this stupid? Is it a crime to be good to someone?
My mum: It's ok ma. Tell me, what is happening?
At this point I was becoming curios as well. What could have been the problem that made this woman barged in on us so angry?
Mummy Gee: See me see problem oo! Mummy Tola, here is what happened.
My husband travelled and when coming back, he bought seven wrappers. Four for me and three for his mum. He said he bought each for 9000naria. I was super excited about them because they really looked beautiful. I then decided to show my neighbors what my husband bought for me. Just for Tina to come to my house few days later oo. She told me she would be going for her introduction and for some reasons, she cannot afford most of the things required by her people. One of those thing are set of wrappers. I should please help her with the one's my husband bought for me.
Infact mummy Tola let me tell you how she said it. "Mummy Gee, I promised to return them. Please ma if I don't take these thing, my introduction would not hold and my sisters will mock me. Please ma. I promise to return them." She was kneeling down while saying all these things.
That was how I carried those wrappers and gave her. I even told her that, she should please return them on time. Could you imagine that after a month, I did not see that lady or my wrappers. I asked her fiance and he told me that they did not go for any introduction so I should not involve him in that conversation.
Just for me to see her last week wearing a gown sewn with my wrappers.
I and my mum screamed JESUS!!
Mummy Gee: Do you know that when I confronted her she was babbling rubbish? Same woman that was on her knees the other day is now speaking nonsense to my face and the one that is annoying me the most is that, her fiance is calling me names.
That man said I am the most foolish woman he has seen earth. How would I give another woman the wrappers my husband bought for me.
My mum: But it is true nah why would you give another woman the new wrappers your husband bought for you? How can you be that foolish?
Mummy Tola: Ahh why would you say such a thing so my kindness has now turned to foolishness shey
My mum: Some things are foolishness not kindness. Now what do you plan on doing?
I sat down there amazed by the whole scenario. To me, she wasn't foolish she was just helping out someone in need. But at this point, I don't know what to think.
The lady that collected the wrappers is avoiding her and Mummy Gee's husband has been asking her why she is yet to send her mother in-law's wrappers.
I really need your opinion on this.
Was she truly foolish? and what is she supposed to now that both the lady in question and her fiance are avoiding her?
