My niece's son started bass- fishing at the tender age of 5, with his father as coach and mentor.
He first learned how to cast from the shoreline and was very excited when Dad bought a Tug 10 Bass boat.
Being a determined young lad, he asked if he could handle their first Bass boat, and Dad allowed him to steer the Sneaker motor.
Linton's father sacrificed much to encourage his young son's hobby, which helped him overcome an awful accident when he suffered severe second-degree burns at the age of eight.
Bass fishing became his passion, and he encouraged his father to upgrade their boat.
Linton told his father "Dad, one day we will fish in my Xterminator bass boat."
His sister also enjoys fishing and joins them at times, with Linton as the coach, telling her she can one day become a pro-fisherwoman!
Linton watches and follows YouTube channels like Tactical Bassin, It's Tipp Topp Fishing, BlacktipH, top-earning professional bass fisherman from Michigan Kevin van Dam aka KVD as well as Jeremy Wade's Bassmaster Fishing Elite TV Series.
He saves his pocket money to stock up on rattle traps and lures and even bought himself a Crucial Rod!
Linton once had a double catch; hooked a small fish and then a big fish that jumped out to seize it, was subsequently hooked!
His passion of course is Bass, but he has caught other species as well.
Their favourite weekend go-to place is Midmar Dam which is only a 20-minute drive from their home.
His personal best before catching the big one was a 4.34kg Bass!
Midmar Dam and Nature Reserve is surrounded by rolling green landscape in Kwazulu Natal and is popular for boating, waterskiing, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, and of course fishing! The Midmar Mile is held here annually and is said to be the world's largest open water swimming event with around 16 000 swimmers taking part!
A new Midmar Dam Record
Their boat needed minor repairs and as soon as it was fixed, Linton's Dad said they could go and try it out after he came home from work, but said they would not fish.
Linton however took his rod and after his 3rd cast, using a rattle trap Ghost, he thought he was stuck on a log, but felt an adrenalin rush when he realized it was a fish and saw the size of the bass's mouth.
It was quite a fight for this young boy as the fish swam under the boat, but he managed to pull it back up so his father could net it!
Little did this 12-year-old boy know that he had landed a new Midmar record – a 6.44kg Bass!
Needless to say, Linton was so enthralled that he hardly slept that night, and is now determined to beat his own personal best!
