На момент роботи над цією відомою картиною художник уже був невиліковно хворий. Він постійно перебував під наглядом лікарів в клініці для душевнохворих.
Можливо, недуга так вплинула на творчу манеру Ван Гога, але картина вийшла зовсім не схожою на все те, що писав художник доти. У полотні немає напруженості, тривожності, густих фарб і теплих оливково-гірчичних відтінків. Навпаки, тут є якась легкість і прозора невагомість. Картина за манерою виконання нагадує японські гравюри.
Художник вибрав для своєї картини незвичайний ракурс. Квіти заповнюють собою практично всю поверхню полотна. Здається, що сидиш на корточках посеред поля, в самій гущі квітів. Але зображення не виглядає застиглим, статичним. Композиція вибудувана так, що погляд мимоволі спрямовується по діагоналі вгору і вліво. Є в «Ірисах» і своєрідна симетрія. Так пляма землі на передньому плані врівноважується оранжево-жовтими бутонами в верхньому лівому кутку.
