Густав Клімт - австрійський художник, яскравий представник ар нуво, чи модерну. Образотворча манера Клімта складалася з багатьох джерел: візантійських мозаїк, живопису прерафаелітів, японської графіки і примітивного мистецтва.
Картина "Поцілунок" відноситься до "золотого" періоду творчості Клімта. При її створенні Клімт змішував масляні фарби з сусальним золотом. Це стало його фірмовим стилем.
На краю квіткової галявини, в золотий аурі, стоять занурені одне в одного закохані. Чоловікові відповідають характерні "жорсткі" форми орнаменту, жінці - "м'які", округлі елементи, хоча вони з'єднані золотим убранням і обіймами в єдине ціле.
Живопису Клімта властива декоративність, орнаментальність і яскраві кольори. За любов до золотого фону, мозаїчність манери і стилізацію ліній Клімта називали "чужинцем з Візантії".

Klimt's painting is characterized by decorativeness, ornamentation and bright colors. For his love of the golden background, mosaic manner and stylized lines, Klimt was called "a foreigner from Byzantium."
"The Kiss" was sold to the gallery in an unfinished form for a record amount of 25 thousand crowns for Austria at that time.
