Can war stop Ukrainians from celebrating? Of course, most of Ukrainians do not feel the traditional Christmas mood this year. Lots of people were killed or wounded. Thousands of Ukrainians had to leave home, lost work, and were made to flee. Sure, there’s no reason to celebrate holidays like we always do. However, life goes on, and in order to overcome stress and anxiety, people in Ukrainian cities and villages decorate streets and houses.
Russians continue to strike Ukrainian infrastructure, leaving people without electricity, heating, and water. It’s quite difficult to make the lights shine bright on Christmas trees. But Ukrainians are inventive and they installed a charming Christmas tree in Kyiv, the capital, powered by generators. The tree is not as high, as usual, but people are sure that this Christmas attribute may cheer up and bring some happiness to children.

Kharkiv, the second largest Ukrainian city is not far from the russian border. This makes it difficult to celebrate the holidays without constant air raid alerts. In order to make people safe, the main Christmas tree was not installed on the central square, but underground.

Mykolaiv, a city in Southern Ukraine, is also suffering massive enemy attacks. This year the Christmas tree in this city is quite “unique”. The military-style tree is installed in the city center and is covered by camouflage net and illumination.
